While this store is a little harder to drive to (it's right off the strange intersection of Hennepin, 94 and some other cross street), if you live in uptown it is easy to walk to. The store is a little smaller, but they still manage to jam in a nice selection at competitive prices.
PROS: Priced competitively
CONS: Hard to drive around their block
This neighborhood liquor store is a little smaller than others, but that does help you get in and out very quickly! The prices are also very competitive.
I love the variety that Zipps offers, but don't always know the best champagne or red wine to bring home. That's okay though, because one of the employees usually approaches me as I'm pondering all my choices and always helps me find the perfect item within my budget. They have high dollar wines, and some of the best "cheap" wines all in one store. I almost always go to Zipps unless the parking lot is a zoo, which it can be.
PROS: Extensive selection!
CONS: Busy parking lot area - hard to park sometimes
I love finding a rare or out-of-print book in this store. The prices are so low that I can afford to walk out with a handful of great finds at a fraction of the price I'd spend elsewhere. Definitely worth checking out if you love books!
Como Zoo has long been a staple in my family. The grounds are in great condition (except for their new construction) and very fun to walk around. The animals are great (we love the monkeys) - and it's so inexpensive to visit. A wonderful place to have a picnic too! My favorite is the conservatory (a small fee to enter) where it feels like you're in the tropics even in January. I also liked a new Japanese style garden they added just behind the conservatory (atrium).
PROS: Beautiful grounds
CONS: Construction mixed in, hard to park on a Saturday
This new age book shop is a must have. They have a great selection of books (tons of books, and used ones in the basement), incense, lotions and oils, tarot cards...and have practitioners who offer their skills right there in the store. If you haven't been there yet, you really should.
If you're in to astrology, witchcraft, voodoo, ghosts or anything else paranormal this is the book store for you. They've been in dinkytown for years and have a great selection as well as contacts for all the best local experts. There was a psychic or palm-reader giving somebody a reading while I was in the store last time. The offer other items too - wiccan objects, incense, and more.
PROS: Nice variety of subjects
CONS: Parking stinks around here
This club is underground in every way, but once you find them you're sure to come back for more. The musicians are masters of their stage and bring in guest vocalists and musicians all the time. You really can't find a jazz club like this anywhere else in the midwest. Check out Tuesday nights for a good time!
You might have to go a little out of your way, but the chocolates and other candies (gummies, Mary-Janes, taffy) are well worth your time. They offer beautiful gift boxes sure to please, and will even wrap them for you. Even the prices are great! I like to pick up the pre-packaged boxes of fudge and chocolates for a quick gift to go.
PROS: Delicious, inexpensive, beautiful packaging!
The Wedge is a wonderful co-op with a lot of great organic and healthy options. If you're not a health-nut, they have some of the best organic cheese puffs in the world. Their service is usually pretty fast. Prices are a little more expensive than a chain grocery store's, but sale prices are abundant.
