The Serova School of Dance is fine if you want to socialize your youngster or teach them basic grace, but it is no place to gain any true technical training. The staff are all people who majored in dance in college, not who actually performed with any reputable companies with the exception of the owner, who did actually perform with a professional company. The classes for beginners are fine, but the intermediate and advanced classes are a waste of money. The school dances in a handful of C-list dance competitions and holds an annual recital. The facilites are not top quality (i.e. floors and mirrors) and it is not in a very safe (or well-lit) area of Somerville.
McGrath's is a great mom and pop hardware store if you want to steer clear of the national chains. One of the main draws is that they are a dealer of Benjamin Moore paints. They have an extensive collection of Benjamin Moore paint available, including the new color samples and the washable flat. They also sell everything from nails to major power tools. The only negative is that the store isn't open very late, even on the weekends. However, they do open quite early. The staff is friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.
This is a nice full service salon offering a wide range of services. I have gotten a haircut there when my stylist was unavailable and they did a pretty good job. I was less pleased with an upstyle hair trial I received before my wedding and I didn't opt to use them for my wedding day. The shop is clean and welcoming and they offer a wide variety of services, from basic haircutting and styling to waxing and facials. Prices are in line with the average prices for the area - a woman's haircut runs approximately $50.
Afterglow is a very nice tanning salon, although on the small side. It is best to call to make an appointment because you will wait a bit for an open bed during busy times. One of the greatest negatives of the salon is that its business hours are quite limited and not especially convenient, particularly if you are a working professional. However, it is one of the cleanest salons I have ever been to and the beds and booths are very high quality. I would highly recommend this salon.
This is a great place to buy your new carpet if you're tired of home improvement factories like Home Depot. Kermizian Carpets has a huge selection of carpets in a huge price range. The quality of the carpet is excellent and the sales staff is knowledgeable. You can explain your particular carpet needs and they will help choose the best carpet for your home, i.e. if you have pets, children, your color scheme, how long you plan to be in your home. They really listen to your needs and don't try to pressure you into buying the most expensive carpet just to make a sale. I didn't feel pressured while shopping there. They also do their own installations so you don't have to feel like you're taking a chance with a subcontractor.
One of the best carpet cleaning services around. It is amazing that a company offering such great service can actually give you an appointment with only a few days notice! They cleaned all of my carpets when I moved into my new home and it made such a difference. They are prompt and extremely thorough. They Scotchgard your carpets while cleaning for no extra charge. They also move your furniture for no extra charge. The drying process only took a few hours, compared with the many hours other services take. Also, the cleaning products they use are pet and child safe.
Roman Jewelers is expensive, but they carry some of the highest quality merchandise in the area. Most of their diamond jewelry is Tiffany calibre in terms of cut, color, and clarity. They will special order or design custom jewelery for you as well. The store carries current styles so you can walk right in and back out again with a nice gift for your wife or girlfriend. They carry high end brands like Breitling and Roberto Coin. They have an especially nice selection of wedding bands, diamond jewelery, and semiprecious stones in gorgeous settings. They carry platinum, white gold, and yellow gold. Watch out - the sparkle of the bling is blinding in the store!
The lighting fixtures at this store can be expensive, but it's usually worth the convenience since you can find just about anything you might be looking for in this store. They have a huge selection of lighting here. I was looking for the wall sconces that plug into your outlets and whereas the super home improvement stores each sold 1-2 styles, Circle Lighting sold 10-15. They also have extensive catalogs on hand for special orders. They are patient and helpful. They also service lighting fixtures which is great. I'd highly recommend this store to anyone looking to get our their lighting needs in one stop!
My husband only trusts Markirk Salon to cut his hair! The girls there are wonderful and give a great cut. They are always prompt with their appointments so there is no wait. The salon is upscale and classy, but relatively inexpensive. There is a real focus on service and making it a relaxing experience, complete with a juice and espresso bar in the back. They use high quality salon products and dont rush you out of there. They take their time to really straighten my very curly hair after a cut there, which I appreciate because then I dont have to go home and do it myself.
My family used this vet for many years, but as the business has grown, they have really lost sight of the customers needs. When my mother had to make the difficult decision to put down her terminally ill cat, she called the office (that had seen my parents cats for over 25 years) and was told that she would have to wait three days for an appointment. I used the vet to have my dog spayed and found them very responsive. I was told to call first thing the next morning to make sure she was cleared and then I could pick her up. I called and left three messages before driving there myself, imagining the worst reasons why they werent calling me back like maybe my dog had complications. When I got there, the receptionist brushed me aside, saying they were busy so they just hadnt called me back. As for busy, there wasnt a single patient in the waiting room. I took my dog home and never went back. They are also very expensive and will charge you the whole visit fee (about $50) for three minutes of their time just to answer a question.
