i went here to get my hair lightened and i was not disappointed. the guy that colored my hair was a pro, he was able to get it the perfect auburn color the first try. it was somewhat expensive (over $100 with tip) but well worth it. i wasn't as impressed with my haircut since it was also expensive but i would go back just for the coloring. the salon is very sharp and clean inside and it's really cool just to see all the stylists' crazy hair. it's located on the second floor near the red line stop on belmont, parking can be tricky at times but i found a meter in a few minutes.
PROS: trendy, cool hair salon with good colorists
this little shop on north halsted located in boys town sells all sorts of adult toys and prank gifts. you can find everything from flavored condoms to bachelor party gifts and of course vibrators. they also sell some lingerie. the employee working when i visited was very laid back and made me feel comfortable asking about the different products and i was very happy about my purchase. nothing seemed overly expensive and there were some deals to be had (cheap vibrators) as well. parking near the store is difficult since there are many bars, restaurants, and other stores in the area.
PROS: good selection of toys
the alley is the best place in chicago to find big leather boots and vintage leather jackets. they have a few hundred boots (doc martens, sketchers, etc.) and tons of leather jackets, shirts, pants along with a few hundred logo t-shirts for bands and various slogans. they also sell tons of jewelry up front but don't do any piercing on premises. i bought a pair of steel toed boots here for $100 and had no complaints, the salesman helped me try on 4-5 different pairs and there was no wait when i went. the store is somewhat cluttered inside but it suits it well given what they sell. most of the employees there have tons of tattoos and can look intimidating but they are all very friendly. the prices on the clothing is a bit high but it all seems pretty well made. parking on clark is really difficult at times, you may be driving around for 30 minutes just to find a meter.
PROS: tons of boots
CONS: a little expensive
i went to this vet because they are located inside the petsmart i buy my pet supplies at. i was told there is no connection between the two companies, the doctor just leases the space inside the store. i had my cat taken here for all his shots and i believe they took good care of him, he didn't seem at all traumtaized afterwards. they even put a cute bandana on him when i came to pick him up. the cost seemed reasonable and i ended up getting pet insurance for almost nothing in case he had any health problems down the road (he's a purebred persian, they are known for having health problems :-) parking is easy and they're open 7 days a week, just call ahead and make an appointment.
PROS: friendly staff
i play in a rec league and i went here looking for some inexpensive soccer equipment. they have a huge selection of shoes, indoor, outdoor cleats, and casual soccer shoes. the main brands are adidas, nike, and puma but they have some other soccer specific brands as well. i was set on spending about $60 on shoes and had a hard time finding my size and ended up spending a bit more for full leather cleats. up front they have a lot of replica jerseys from USA to european clubs but they are all pricey around $60. the salespeople are all friendly and were ready to help me as soon as i got in the store. parking isn't too bad on western and they're open pretty late.
PROS: best selection in chicago
CONS: didn't have my size
Uncle Dan's sells a big selection of outdoor and winter clothing. When I visited I was looking for a pair of gloves and a jacket and they had a huge selection of both. Jackets they sell North Face, Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear, and a few other brands. Acting on the advice of the salesman I bought a North Face double layer jacket that has so far been extremely warm. They had a few dozen pairs of gloves and I was able to get some for about $20. They also sell glove liners if it gets really cold out. The store is a little small inside but they manage to fit a lot of merchandise in it and everyone working there was nice. Parking is very difficult in Evanston so you may be driving around looking for a meter.
PROS: good selection of top brands
CONS: no discounts
I went here once after looking them up in the yellow pages when I had a cough that would not go away. I had to wait for about 40 minutes before I was seen by a nurse and then a doctor. The nurse ran a few small tests that the doctor later repeated for the most part. All of the staff was very friendly, I have no complaints about the actual service just the waiting. and I ended up receiving some a prescription for antibiotics after spending 90 minutes there. The facility was clean and quiet inside but the wait was too much, I would try another immediate care center next time.
PROS: attentive doctor
CONS: long wait
Dr. Hanson removed my wisdom teeth with great skill and I had absolutely no complications. The office was clean and his assistants were very friendly. I visited once for a consultation and the second time I returned he removed all four of my wisdom teeth in under an hour while I was awake with no pain. He used great skill to stich my lowers and gave me medication for the pain that I didn't even need. I recommend him to all my friends if they need their wisdom teeth removed. There is validated parking in the lot across the street.
PROS: skilled oral surgeon
Champaign surplus is an army surplus store + outdoor clothing/camping goods store. In the front they have tons of warm winter apparal including hiking gear, ski gear, and camping equipment. In the back they have their army section with all kinds of camo army clothing and army medals and supplies (real army messenger bags) I tried some of the army stuff on and wasn't that impressed, it was cheap but the name brand stuff up front I thought was nicer. They also have a large selection of boots, including some huge steel toe army boots. I picked out some gloves and a hat here from a huge selection up front and I still use them years later. The store is in downtown champaign and they have a parking lot so parking is never a problem.
PROS: really impressive selection
CONS: far from UIUC campus
Record Swap is located in downtown Urbana away from the UIUC campus but if you are a collector it might be worth checking out. They mostly carry used cd's (they'll buy just about anything) and I have found a few cd's here i really like. The store is pretty small but they still have a lot of CD's in there including a lot of clearance bins with super cheap CD's. Their hours are weird, I would call ahead to make sure they are open, I think the employees leave at will to get lunch or just take a break during the day. Parking nearby is all meters but I have never had trouble finding a spot in Urbana.
PROS: unique selection of cheap cd's
CONS: hard to get to if you're a student with no car
