**UPDATE 06/01/11** - VG's Butcher Shop has officially closed it's doors :(
I decided to buy a beef brisket, which I planned to smoke, and I decided to buy it from Greg. His beef is Angus, corn fed and from Nebraska. Yes, I know that isn't Texas but, and this is a big but, when I tested a smaller brisket the week before it was, and I kid you not, the BEST brisket I have ever had - tender, a little sweet, and juicy in the extreme.
Greg is a local butcher with a small local shop, and he is my new source for meat. Greg knows what he is doing and offers a great product.
I recently went to this bakery looking for some dessert. I picked up a piece of tres leches cake and a flan. I brought them home and tried them both but I was not impressed. The tres leches was very grainy, almost like a corn bread texture and the flan, while nice and creamy, did not have much flavor at all. I really expected more. I noticed the bakery also offers breakfast and lunch burritos, tacos, etc. I may come back again just to try that but I will not try the desserts again.
Jade Dragon offers take-out, delivery and dine in services. Their food is fresh and very good. I have had their food on numerous occasions through deliver, takeout and dining in and I have always been pleased. They are like a typical Chinese restaurant where they give you large portions at a low price. I have tried other Chinese take-out places in the area and this one is the best. I especially like their egg rolls and pork fried rice.
My wife and I decided to try out Babes today. The restaurant is in a renovated old area of downtown Burleson. When you walk in you will noticed that it is very dark inside and the decor is kind of flea market/garage saleish. All the tables and chairs are mismatches that look like they were all purchased from various thrift shops. I felt that the lighting was way too dark inside and this was in the middle of the afternoon.
We were seated promptly and our order was taken quickly. This location offers fried chicken, chicken fried steak, catfish and a couple of other items. Everything is served family style and they only offer 3 types of vegetables, creamed corn, mashed potatoes and green beans which are all you can eat.
We both order the chicken fried steak which came with the vegetables, biscuits, cream gravy and a salad.
Salad: I was not impressed. This was just a bowl of lettuce covered in a sweet vinaigrette which over powering. There was nothing else in the bowl except iceberg lettuce.
Biscuits: The biscuits were not bad but I imagine they were from a mix
Green Beans: They had good flavor but I believe they are from a can
Mashed Potatoes: The potatoes tasted like they were made from instant potato flakes. They were way too smooth to be homemade.
Creamed Corn: This was my favorite vegetable. It was very good.
Cream Gravy: Tasty but is was a little thick, like it had been sitting in a steam table all day.
Chicken Fried Steak: I was a little disappointed. One of our steaks was very tender while the other was tough. Also the coating was coming off the steak and not sticking like it should have. As far as the taste, it was not bad but was lacking some flavor.
Overall I would just say that Babes is ok. We did not try their fried chicken but I would not order the chicken fried steak again. I was disappointed to see that it looks like most of their vegetables are not homemade. If a restaurant is going to offer such a limited menu and serve family style then I would expect everything to be made from scratch.
This is the first and only time I have ever used this company. I also do not plan on returning. I brought in my wife's blouse which was only 2 weeks old and being dry cleaned for the first time. When I picked up the garment had threading coming out in various places. The manager told me that this was an issue with the garment and that I needed to talk to the store where I bought it.I took the blouse back to the store and the store showed me that this was not a manufacturing defect but that the threads were coming out because they were snagged. Luckily the store was accommodating and replaced the garment. I am not happy that the dry cleaner tried to pass off their mistake on the garment manufacturer.
I have been to Moon Wok about 4 times now and every time the food has been excellent and the staff had been very friendly. I have never used their delivery, since I am not in their delivery area.
My favorites by far are the pork fried rice and szechwan chicken.
Much better than any of the other area take outs.
**UPDATE** - Mapsco is no longer in business and was purchased by another map company. They no longer have any retail location in Texas.
I have used Mapsco street guides for many years. They are very good maps but much too expensive. I have found that if you need to get one of their street guides the best place to get one is at Sams or Costco, they are considerably cheaper. Mapsco also seems to be behind when it comes to mapping software or gps, I was disappointed to learn that they do not offer much in the way of digital products. I hope they realize that paper maps will not be around forever.
My wife and I decided to try The Butcher Shop after I purchased a discount gift certificate online for the restaurant. We decided to go on a Saturday night around 7:30 pm. I assumed that this would be a busy time, so I went to their website and did an online reservation. When we got to the restaurant we opened the doors and there were a total of 3 other tables. We were greeted by someone who was obviously not a host or hostess. They were wearing chef pants and a t-shirt. Also, I have read other reviews where people said they displayed all their meats in a windowed cooler as you walk by, apparently not anymore. The cooler was completely empty. After being seated by a cook, we ordered a glass of wine and then placed our orders. We ordered the 8 oz Filet Mignon priced at $30.00. The waiter then brought us some unimpressive bread and then our salads with wilted lettuce. A few minutes later he brought us our entrees. I was immediately over taken by an awful smell. I thought at first it was the twice baked potato (which was horrible and swimming in a pool of oil) but it was actually the steaks. It appears they put a lot of garlic powder on their steaks.
We were very disappointed in this place. They were charging Ruths Chris prices for Golden Corral steaks. The atmosphere was also lacking. The place looked like it should be upscale but they were playing XM radio. So as we sat there we got to listen to "sunny" music and commercials. Something else we noticed on the way out was our waiter and the bartender both standing in the corner eating dinner.
I am not sure what happened to this place. From reading other reviews, it looks like new owners took over this place and it is slowly going downhill. I suggest they contact Gordon Ramsay and his Kitchen Nightmares show. That is what this place reminded me of.
Ducky Bobs is the place to go if you need to rent things for a party for work or home. They have anything you could think of. The only issue sometimes is the cost of the rentals.
PROS: Large selection of rentals
CONS: Sometimes a little expensive
Our company has used Hooker Ballew for years to print brochures, catalogs and more. They do great quality work and have a fast turn around. They are very friendly and always willing to please the customer.
PROS: Fast printing
