Huge inventory, on par with the 'regular' grocery stores, but choices available are based on sustainability, fair labor, and justice. I love being able to buy anything I see, and know that someone has already done my homework for me.
this club has an awesome sailing school for kids 7 and up. they have pretty new boats, and the coach is a world-class sailor in his own right. Sailors from this club rank amoung the best competitive sailors in the world, but there is still a place for the novice. If you are looking for a place for your child to learn to sail, this is a great value for a very affordable price.
best theater in the twin cities. you don't see first run movies, but you only pay 3 bucks. there are fewer previews, fewer punks, and more money for candy and popcorn. Great family place.
Small business, owner run. I trust the mechanics, and have been very satisfied with the work they have done on my past 2 cars over the past 8 years. they kept my old truck running until it was about 16 years old! the prices are really reasonable. the only obstacle is that the owner and the mechanics are not native english speakers, so sometimes it takes a little effort to communicate...but they are up for it if you are...
They get an awesome amount of stuff into this little store, and the staff can put their hands directly on it! They can help you figure out what you need if you aren't sure, too. Amazing customer service.
I started in the UMn branch of this school. Within the first month, I was seriously injured while being thrown by one of the young, strong, male members. I was unable to use my right arm at all, but I was sent off to the emergency room ON MY OWN. Have you ever tried driving a stick shift without a functioning right arm? anyway, turns out I tore every insertion out of my right shoulder, an injury that took over 5 years to heal. No one ever called me to see how I was, which hurt ever so much more than the actual injury. There is seriously something wrong with the leadership, and I recommend you stay AWAY from this place.
5 of my cats have been treated at this clinic, 3 of them through debilitating long-term illnesses of old-age (leukemia, kidney failure, and diabetes). The care has been nicely balanced between what is possible (and potentially very expensive), and what is adequate to keep my beloved beasts comfortable until their end-time. I find the vets here are continuously keeping up on new research and developments, take enough time to communicate with us about our pets, and cooperate with us to provide the best care for our animals, even to the point of training us enough to do pretty complex treatments at home...
This school is deeply rooted in community, with respect for child at the heart of everything. The needs of preschool-age children are deeply known, and the teachers have great ability to tap into my child's changing interests to cultivate a deep visceral understanding of math, to learn spelling and phonics, geography, music...the curricula is very well rounded...I can't believe how my child is reading and writing, and she is only 4!
PROS: 3 year cycles with a given teacher
CONS: enrollment ends at 9th grade
I am partial to the contra dancing that is held every Saturday night except the first Saturday of the month. Live music of the most excellent caliber. Callers that are experienced and call very fun dances. Instruction starts half hour before the dance, and is free. I love the atmosphere that is alcohol and smoke free. There are 2 dance floors made with real sprung wood. It doesn't get any better than this!
The zen of 'being'. This is a comfortable place to hang out, either by yourself or with friends. There are comfortable chairs, plenty of light, games available, and free wireless internet! The coffee is really good, and there is a selection of 'treats' available. They also have readings some evenings of local authors/poets, and display art from local artists. Finally, it is tolerant of all sexual preferences, even though they are known as a GLBT haven. Ohhhhmmm....
