Good BBQ and great atmosphere, especially upstairs. And - here's the surprise - Ernie's has really good salads. A group of us went one day and one person ordered salad. We made fun of her until she got it and then we all wanted a salad.
We always have breakfast at Camille's when we're in Key West. It's small but the food is worth waiting for. Great eggs and pancakes.
Go to the Green Parrot to feel like a local. This open-air bar has friendly people, great bartenders and "eclectic" decor. It feels like Key West and you might decide to become a conch.
Cafe 88 is a convenient, close-to-campus option for Asian food. It serves heaping plates of several varieties of fried rice for very reasonable prices. It's often crowded so consider getting your order to go.
Quite possibly the best burgers ever. They're small and come on squares of wax paper but so full of flavor. The place is an institution and it feels like it. Fun people and most everyone who walks through the door will come across a friend there at some point.
It's old-school beach food on one of the most gorgeous beaches in California.
The gazpacho is one of my favorites. Fresh seafood is the best bet here. Then walk it off with a stroll towards Point Dume.
Proof that healthy food can be tasty and even hearty. The whole menu is vegetarian, with several vegan choices.
Nell's 7-layer salad with tofu green goddess dressing? Yum
Buddah bowl? Oh yeah.
And you've never had grilled cheese like that.
In the summer, get a large Austin in August (lemon, ginger and apple freshly juiced.
I'm picky about my gumbo, but theirs is to die for. Also be sure to try the jambalaya and the red beans and rice. I've moved away but treasure my copy of their red beans and rice recipe!
As others have said, don't be fooled by the outside. The food they serve is stellar. The raspberry wings are outstanding - yeah, it sounds strange if you haven't had them before but trust me. Chicken zingara and chicken piccata are good too. Be sure to save room for the derby pie.
Sadly, this new BBQ place on the strip in Stillwater was disappointing. Portions weren't very big, the brisket wasn't that tender and I didn't really taste much smoke. To top it off, they served it with a sweet BBQ sauce already on the meat.
I prefer BBQ sauce that isn't as sweet. The service was fine, the atmosphere left a bit to be desired - some drunk guys playing pool.
