When my inlaws were having a birthday party at their house for my 6 year old niece, the had it hosted by Captain Cooks Culinary Academy. This is a cooking school by day that moonlights with children's parties. They brought all the supplies and chef's aprons for a bunch of 6-10 year olds to decorate cookies and cupcakes. I thought it was genius! The kids were entertained, the moms and dads got to sit back and watch and everyone got to each a bunch of sugary things when everything was done. I thought it was a very imaginative way to celebrate a child's birthday. The cleanup wasn't bad either - my smarty mother in law laid down plastic all over the dining room and pathway into the kitchen.
When I walked out of another salon because they didn't do brazilians, I was floored. I pulled out my handy dandy Blackberry and did a quick google search and found Simply Skin-Sational. I called immediately and made an appointment at their salon th next day. Minda was a dream come true! She was professional, friendly, does all the treatments herself (it's her salon) and knows what's she doing in the world of brazilians. She told me brazilians were her forte and she wasn't kidding. I've been getting brazilians for at least 5 years and she's by far the best waxer I've ever used. She's quick, thorough and keeps a light banter up. She couldn't believe there are still people out there who claim they're waxing professionals who refuse to do brazilians. I'm still shaking my head over that one. It's not like they aren't popular. I'm glad the other place couldn't help me - Minda was great!
After bringing in my daughter's dress in to be hemmed for her dance and liking the results, I brought the beaded dress I was going to be wearing for my best friend's wedding in to Jean Tailor & Alterations to have Jean work her magic. Everybody I had spoken to previously who's ever used her services said Jean was a talented seamstress. Even though I was very nervous about my dress, she did a great job on it. I had to have the straps adjusted and the waist nipped in. She also lined the straps and the upper part of the bodice so it wouldn't scratch (she did this on her own and at no charge). I was impressed beyond belief and haven't felt the need to look elsewhere since for a tailor. Jean's it.
I went to a Touch of Aloha to get lash extensions. My friend had gotten hers done for her wedding and they came out great! My lashes are on the thin and puny side - I had to see what they'd look like full, rich and thick. I hate wearing false lashes (I can never get them on right) and the idea of not having to wear mascara was very appealing. My session lasted about an hour and afterwards - instant lashes. I really like them but the upkeep is a pain (they tend to fall out over the course of 2 weeks). It's an expensive habit.
I took my several of my husband's suits in for alterations to the Tara Tailor Shop. Tara herself was there when I brought in the suits and she carefully went over each one with us to make sure they would fit him just right. Tara knows how to work her customers - my husband was loving the attention. She really did do a great job - when I went to pick the suits up and got them home, they fit my husband like a glove.
When one of my crazy friends wanted to start hiking, I pulled out my trusty, dusty pair of hiking boots from the back of the closet and took a look at them. They needed to be resoled and one of the laces was frayed, so I brought them in to the Next Step Shoe Repair. I chose them because I passed by them several times and wanted to give them a try. The gentleman behind the bench barely looked up when I walked in, but I greeted him with a cheerful hello and a smile that seemed to warm him up. Once I was nice to him, he was very pleasant to me. I showed him my boots, explained what I thought they needed and left them in his hands. A week later I returned to find my boots in great shape. The same gentleman was behind the bench again when I walked in and greeted me this time with a hello. He showed me what he had done and waited for me to say something. I thanked him profusely, paid and left the shop. It seems to me this man is used to being treated rudely or unkindly. A cheery hello and a smile goes a long way.
La Jolla Shoe Repair fixed the heel on my husband's favorite pair of boots and really shined them up. They had suggested we get them resoled because they were wearing thin, so I had them do it as well. When I picked up these boots (they're at least 5 years old), they looked brand new! It was amazing what this cobbler could do. My husband was pretty darned pleased.
I brought my son's new dress shoes to Yes Shoe Repair to be stretched out a bit. They told me it would take a week and then I could pick them up. The next day, I brought them my daugther's sandals and my new pair to be stretched as well. When I went back after a week, everything was ready. They managed to get a bit of stretch in them to make the shoes much more comfortable to wear.
My skin needed some oomph before my friend's wedding and I didn't have the time to go through a series of microderms. I had heard about Jennifer Waring of the Advance Clinical Aesthetics clinic and her work with specialy skin treatments. After I called for an appointment, I was thoroughly impressed with the lactic acid peel I had done to my face and neck. She was able to get me in 2 weeks before the event and by the time of the big day, my skin was glowing and silky. She did exactly what I needed - and wanted - to have done.
Princess Nails did my nails when I was in a rush and needed to get them done in a hurry. I waited until the last minute to get my nails done before an engagement party and couldn't show up with the ragged mess I had. I chose Princess because I had seen them before, hadn't tried them yet and they were conveniently located to where I needed to be for the party. I ran in, waited a few minutes (it was really only 2 or 3), they sat me down and went to work on my nails. The were speedy, neat and dried me in a flash. I didn't have time for a fancy design (which is what I'd normally have done), so I settled for a plain polish. All in all, they saved my beauty reputation. I'd go back again - hopefully when I'm not in overdrive!
