I am sorry to say that I had an extremely disappointing experience with H. Horwitz. The few times I interacted with staff, they were courteous, but I don??t feel that the company worked very hard to sell my jewelry.
In February of 2009, I brought in a diamond engagement ring that had originally been purchased for about $6,700. The gentleman I spoke to told me that I could either sell the ring directly to the company for $3,500 or I could put it on consignment for the price of $5,000 (sale price to be negotiable if a lower offer came in). I agreed to place the ring under consignment.
I followed up twice in an 18-month period ?? no sale. I finally decided to take the ring off consignment and reclaim it in August of 2010. At that time, I was told that an offer for the diamond alone had been submitted for $1,750. I was notified of this offer via email, by a representative of H. Horwitz and was told that it was a good deal, as similar diamonds were selling for between $2,000 and $2,200.
When I reconfirmed that I wanted to take the ring back, I was advised that ??we can??t achieve $4,000? on the ring but ??maybe higher than our current offer?.
Again I confirmed that I wanted to take the ring back. On the day before I was to pick it up, I was told via email that the children of some regular clients were interested in the ring and that the offer was $2,200.
Once again, I told the representative that I wanted to ring back. I picked it up the next day.
I understand that the market may be flooded with second-hand diamonds and engagement rings (it??s a recession after all). I also understand the stigma that comes along with a second-hand engagement ring. That said, I was more than a bit dismayed with the fluctuating offers. I was also concerned that only when I wanted to take the ring off consignment was I suddenly being presented with any sort of proposal ?? and a below-market one at that.
H. Horwitz might be a wonderful place to buy your ring, especially if you are only paying $1,750 on something valued at $6,700, but based on my experience, I would not recommend consigning your jewelry there.
