My experience with Doc Able's Auto Clinic was a little different. Mr. Steve G. (the owner) listed a car "for a friend-a retired police officer" on ebay. I bought the car, drove four hours to pick it up, and he wasn't even there. He told me on the phone that the garage looked the car over from top to bottom and it was in perfect mechanical condition, safe to put my kids in and to drive the four hours back home. I have text messages and other documentation to prove it.
We had minor "bumps" on the way home, but nothing to indicate the major amount of issues with the car. I took it to a trusted garage my family has used for decades, who told me that there were around $2000 dollars worth of work, $900 that needed to be taken care of immediately for the safety of the vehicle, and he let me drive that piece of crap home with shot brake pads! The garage I took it to told me they were shocked that I even got it home after they'd looked at it. It also needs tires, which he told me were replaced less than 20,000 miles ago. He won't provide any documentation of any "work" previously done on the car at all.
When I contacted him after I'd already put money into the car, and paid the tax/title/license, and traveling expenses, he told me I could bring it back...at my own expense. I am a small town girl, I was naive, and was taken advantage of by Steve & Doc Able's. He talks in circles and keeps everything as vague as possible to try and cover up his lies. He swore at me, yelled, called me names, and told me I was trying to extort him. I was trying to extort him?! What the heck?!?! I have never been taken to court and I have never taken anyone to court. I am not the extortionist in this situation.
Long story short, I have contacted the police department in his area, I am contacting the FBI internet crime division, the state's attorney, and will be contacting a lawyer. We will be contacting the BBB, NAPA, and Evanston Chamber of Commerce, as well. We are a military family and will also be contact the local military public affairs office and staff judge advocate's office to place his business on the list of establishments "black listed" so to speak, from the military, so military families are warned of his scamming. My fiance just came back from Afghanistan protecting our freedoms, only to get scammed by a extortionist that doesn't care about anything but lining his pockets.
If anyone wants to contact me to help me shut this place down, I would certainly appreciate the help. They have stolen from enough people. You can email me at CloseDocAbles@yahoo.com with your story, any documentation you have, and contact info and I will make sure it gets to every interested agency. Maybe we can get some justice in the world instead of just writing bad reviews, (although that helps, too!)
To give an example of this character....
My fiance called him after we got the estimate to try and reasonably work something out before things went any further. In their conversation, we told him that leaking fluids were just one of the issues with the car. He asked, "Are they seeping or are they leaking, because seeping is more a matter of opinion and doesn't need to be replaced right away. There is a difference between the two." In a response to another bad review listed on yelp (which I have copied to my computer, printed out, and taken a screen shot of- just in case he decides to delete it), he states the following on 11/12/2013:
"Hi Judy, I appreciate your feed back. It is shop policy to bring any seepage or leakage to the clients attention and recommend repair. Seepage is the first sign of a leak. A leak can happen at any time once seepage sets in. Without the proper amount of fluid the system it is intended to lubricate or cool it will fail! Our 97 point safety inspection is not only designed to find immediate safety issues if they are present, it will also find future problems so they can be corrected in a more manageable way. All recommendation are based off your vehicles manufacture guidelines and our ASE training."
This man tried to intimidate us and try and get us to back down, but that isn't going to happen. The worst evil in the world is when good people that can do something choose to do nothing.
