Wake Forest, NC
A review should be informative and simply saying something is excellent is just as much of a disservice to readers as it is to say something bad without explanation. With that in mind, this is a detailed review.
A note upfront:
Regarding the NC State Childcare Star rating: Can you attend a 1 star daycare and get outstanding care, certainly, but the odds are stacked against it and research has proven that. The higher the rating, the higher educated and experienced teachers your child will be exposed to. Ask any 5 star daycare if it is worth the rating and they will say it makes all the difference for their business. Ask a 1 star rating daycare and they will come up with any excuse to justify not going through the rating system to save money for their wallets and time.
My experience at Wake Forest Kids are Kids:
To begin, we did not have any issues at this 1 star daycare while our child was in the newborn or 1 year old rooms. They had fabulous teachers that tended to the children's needs and I'd even say the teachers were rather clever in many ways.
Once our child was in either the 1 1/2 and 2 year old rooms, various issues started to develop for various reasons. Most issues were minor, but the 2 big issues (biting and neglect) effectively made us lose total confidence in this facility.
One of the 1 1/2 year old teachers was fired shortly after the state investigated a complaint and that lead to 2 new inexperienced teachers who had their backs to the children for a majority of the time. This created excessive biting issues (up to 3 bites/week for several children) and was brought to the attention of the Director. She didn't offer any solutions to help stem the biting problem, only that the biting occurs, and just as quick as it occurs, it then disappears. The situation was resolved (or at least greatly diminished) after a call to KidsRKids corporate office, when a 3rd person was assigned to the room.
The final issue of neglect that actually made us leave this daycare was shortly after a wonderful teacher left and a new teacher was assigned into the 2 year old room. We found our 2 year old child on video with her pants and underwear down to her ankles for a half hour, standing right outside the bathroom or sitting with her bare butt on the bathroom floor when she couldn't pull her pants up. The teachers were less than 10 feet away from her but were too busy talking to assist with pulling up pants. This appears to be the standard care of children as when we questioned the teachers, they had no idea what we were talking about. When this was brought to the owner's attention all he could simply say is he actually thought maybe the teachers were using some sort of teaching method and did not offer an apology.
Check with the NC state licensing agency as they have been out to this daycare in 2014 for several complaints or have found many violations (eg. neglect, inappropriate language by teachers, threats to kill a child, director holding a child against their will, etc).
Since our move to another facility we have found out that the star rating does matter. Our child attends a 5 star daycare, where all the teachers have their early childhood degrees and several years of experience. The parents are well informed of the curriculum, the menus and schedules. The school also personally takes accountability of all activities done on site (Tumble Bus, etc.) comply with the state laws. Wake Forest KidsRKids was not doing any of that when we were.
We were very fortunate that our bad experience did not forever harm our child and has actually led us to higher quality care. For a 1 star facility, they are charging about $60/week too much. Other day cares in the area who are a 5 star, charge the same price and have wait lists.
In summary, if you are looking for quality care, be very wary of anything less than 4-5 stars. There is no reason to pay for 5 star quality to a 1 star facility.
