Working in Pasadena I thought I had been to all the local restaurants. Boy, was I mistaken. In an area that is quickly becoming devoid of character, Azeen's is a shining star. I know what you're thinking, "what the hell is Afghani food?" Let me tell you, it's good. Their lamb, chicken, and beef are without question the best around. The place is clean, the service is great, and I've never left hungry. Working in the area, I generally eat there about 2-3 times a week for lunch and never get bored of the flavor.
If your sick of the Cheesecake Factory, want something more substanital than Louise's, and like good food with great flavor, give Azeen's a try. It's a little off the beaten path, one block north of Colorado on Union, but well worth it. Go there once and I guarantee you will return.
Lunches range from about $9 - $13. A little more than I liike to spend for lunch but the quality makes up for any premium spent.
PROS: The food, the owner, I love it all...
CONS: Having to wait until 11:30 to eat lunch
My wife was a patient of Dr Kornafel for about a year. Since we used her for fertility issues, I had to be deeply involved in the process. One of the biggest gripes I have about doctors is they don't respect your time. Dr Kornafel is no exception. I don't think there was ever an appointment where I didn't wait at least an hour to see her. It's especially bothersome when it's your money that is being spent (insurance typically doesn't pick up her services). I could live with the waiting if the rest of the experience was pleasant. Unfortunately, her sensitivity is about a 2 on a 1-10 scale and her knowledge (compared to other doctors we've seen) is about a 4. Without getting into specifics, we ended up spending about $20k with no results. I understand this is can always happen but, at our last visit, she told us there was little hope and our only option was a $50k procedure that had little hope of working. Six months later, at the urging of a nurse friend of mine, we saw a different doctor. Turns out, Dr Kornafel was wrong on both counts. The procedure is relatively inexpensive and had a 70% success rate (in our case). There are many other doctors and clinics out there that are much better.
PROS: Easy parking (it's all I can think of!)
CONS: lack of professionalism & faulty information,
This place doesn't get near the respect it deserves. I've eaten here 10 times in the last year and I can honestly say it is the best kabab house in the area. The place is small and they do most of their business on take out but they do have a couple tables inside that you can call and reserve.
They serve food family style, the quality is excellent, and the prices are unexpectedly low. It's run by a husband/wife team who couldn't be nicer. The location isn't the greatest, but don't let that fool you.
PROS: The food. High quality, fair prices
CONS: It's small and the location is off the beaten path
I went in to pick up some roses early on Valentine's. The flowers were nice, but for $150 I expected really nice, not 12 short stemmed roses in a square vase. I realize I was paying a lot for the name but i couldn't tell the difference between their flowers and the floral dept at Ralphs. Luckily, no one was available to help me so I left and found much better flowers and service elsewhere.
PROS: Good quality (so I hear, I couldn't tell)
CONS: Get ready to hawk your guitar to afford them
Having been raised in Glendale, my experiences with Mario's go back over 30 years. It still looks the same as it always has and the food is second to none. The sandwiches are fresh and always great, and the Italian groceries are awesome. The place looks and smells the way an Italian deli should--like Italy. It's the best Italian market in the LA area.
PROS: The salami
CONS: There are none
If you're in the Old Town area nd you want Chinese food, do yourself a favor and go here. The food is light years ahead of Fortune's 'sorry ass excuse for food' across the street. The dishes are about $8-10 each for lunch, but it's worth it. The portions are bigger than expected and the quality is high. I tried five different dishes and each was top notch.
The service was a little slow once the place got busy but overall I was really impressed.
PROS: The food, obviously.
CONS: The service could use some work.
Not the place to take a date if you are trying to impress her but this place is one of the few in Pasadena that has some character left. The atmosphere is mostly dudes as I don't know any females that would venture in here w/o an escort. The girls that do frequent the place look like they could bust ass if push comes to shove. They make a decent drink and it's a good place to warm up before hitting the other bars. If nothing else, you'll appreciate the talent at the other bars sitting in this place for a drink or two.
PROS: Hey, they don't call it the Dirty Diver for nothing!
CONS: Mostly dudes...
I ate here after seeing that they sponsored a baseball team in my nephew's league. The food was a little unimpresive. I had the baby back ribs and honestly, the ribs at Claim Jumper were much better. They were tougher than I expected and, honestly, not that great. The food arrived almost immediately, and the restaurant had the feel of a high end fast food joint.
PROS: They spnsor a t-ball team
CONS: I expected more
How they make chicken taste so good is beyond me. I've heard there are little elfs in the back performing some ancient magic cause that chicken is the best you will ever eat. The counter staff is surly, it's usually crowded, and the workers aren't the best around but you won't even notice once that magic bird hits your mouth.
PROS: The chicken
CONS: Can't think of any, I'm in on a chicken high.
For a city course, Hansen Dam is a nice choice. Not as nice as Griffith Park but decent. There are some long holes that require some challenging shots. You used to be able to see OJ here before he moved to Florida. The back nine is scenic and feels like a completely different course than the front.
PROS: Good for a city course
CONS: It's a city course
