I love this place! I usually try to go during Happy Hour because everything is so cheap! Sometimes it gets really busy so the service is slow. But you can never go wrong with Gyu-kaku! I love to start with the tofu salad, then get every type of meat LOL and drink the yummy shochu cocktails. I recommend making reservations if you plan to go during happy hour. Otherwise you'll be waiting for a good hour.

Gyu-Kaku is always a good choice for great food. It is a bit pricey but if you go with a lot of people, you can split the costs. They also have specials with a whole combination of different meats and appetizers for a better price. Their Kobe beef is great (i like it with the garlic sauce) as well as everything else on the menu. One thing that i really like about this place is that you can cook your own food (it's like Korean BBQ, but with Japanese food) so you can cook it the way that you like it.

Brought over from Japan, Gyu-kaku doesn't leave the good quality behind. However, the portions are smaller and the dishes are overpriced, but this is a very social place here and if you and your friends come here to relax you should have a very good time. Service is good, food is good, drinks are good, just make sure you bring your cash.

I personally thought Gyu-Kaku is the best japanese food around the area. My family and I go here to celebrate after events, and we order the family combination plates. It's great food and cooking it yourself is fun. I suggest ordering their Garlic Fried Noodles in addition to whatever you order there.

As for service, it give it 3 As for all three of my visits there. I'll definitely be going there again in the near future.

We just happened by this restaurant and took a chance and boy am I glad we did. The food was soo good. More than enough to make you happy. The price was a little high, but you are in Huntington. It is located off the 405, and the interior is very upscale, so is the clientele. But don't let that keep you away. It is good for everyone. We really enjoyed our meals there, and the drinks were so enjoyable, pricey but that was just par for the course with the meal.

The food is good. The portions are small so you will want to keep a menu at the table. On our last visit, the service was lacking. They were not attentive. I would understand if it was busy, but there were only 2 tables. My water was empty for about 15 minutes. The rice did not arrive with the meat (we ordered it in the beginning). It was tiring to remind them of basic things we needed for our meal (plates of our meat were forgotten, we did not have utensils, & asking to get our water refilled). It wasn't like this the other times, so I think we just got some crummy servers. Our meals usually average at $140-$150 (meat, shrimp, drinks, & rice).

THE WORST GYU KAKU EVEERRRRR...My Girlfriends and I are VERY frequent/regulars at the Gyu Kaku in Pasadena on Green st. but i came to this huntington branch for my friends birthday one night and wow...it honestly made me think twice about coming back to ANY Gyu Kaku period....First off..the atmosphere was awkward and too quiet. Secondly, the servers were terrible looking/sloppy and disrespectful. They accused our group (who ended up spending a thousand dollars there) that one of our friends vomitted on their front door just because we were the largest table to order drinks...impossible because none of us left the seat except for the bathroom and no one was sick...the server JACO SHOULD BE FIRED...VERY RUDE AND CONDESCENDING...GRADE: F

Cons: Everything...Servers are disrespectful and boring.

This place has the worst service ever. The food is mediocre, service is sooooo slow and I am offended they call it Japanese BBQ. The workers are not Japanese but non-asians would never know. The greeting in Japanese they give at the door doesn't even make sense!! The management is awful. If you are looking for a truly wonderful Japanese BBQ restaurant, go to Anjin in Costa Mesa. Go early because there is always a minimum of a hour wait. The short rib soup is to die for, quality and marinate on the meat is A++ and the restaurant is actually Japanese owned (hard to find these days!).

I have been to Gyu-kaku in Japan and was expecting the same quality, but I was sadly mistaken. Compared to other Japanese BBQ in Orange County, Gyu-kaku was by far the worst. I will say that Gyu-kaku's atmosphere in Orange County is great- dark and intimate, but the dark lighting is just there to cover their old and browning meat. When I told the waiter the meat was brown, he said, "that's the way some of them are." And to add insult to injury, the sake over priced and small quantity (served in a shot glass). My advice to anyone thinking of going to Gyu-kaku in Huntington Beach for the first time, Don't. Why Waste your money and time when there are so many REAL Japanese BBQ places in Orange County: tsuruhashi, Hondaya/ Kappo Honda or Anjin. You may have to wait at this places, depending on the time and day of the week, but they well worth the wait to get in- prices are within reason and with any true Japanese Restaurant, you get quality!!!!

I've only been once, but it was excellent. Another couple recommended the place to us, and they took us out there for dinner once.

Be sure to try all the different meats and sauces. The variety of what you can get in one sitting makes it worth it alone.

I've eaten a lot of Japanese barbecue and Korean barbecue (I lived in Japan for 5 years and ate a lot of Yakiniku) This one was a step above all the rest. The atmosphere is awesome. The food is awesome.

The waiter we had seemed a little condescending because he was well educated on the food, and he wanted to be sure we knew about it. However, we didn't let that ruin our experience. We just shrugged him off and enjoyed what we came for.

this place is nothing but good food and good people. i've gone a couple times, once on a date, once for a birthday and another time just because. every time i've gone in, my experience was nothing less than superb. the staff at gyu kaku seems so fun and they're always willing to help. the food is great! especially since you can mix and match the marinades, i never felt limited to a strict menu. the restaurant itself has got a modern "asian" inspired feel, and light house and techno songs play in the background to keep the atmosphere upbeat. you'll find a mix of young adults, families and even elderly couples. this place is great for dates and family and friend get togethers. its a must try!

My first thought about this restaurant was, "Why would I go out to dinner to cook my own food?!" But this place is amazing. They have the best quality cuts of meats, fresh veggies, a huge list of premium sake and cocktails, and an amazing staff. Our server was very knowldgeable and helpful. They will give good recommendations and thoroughly explain the dishes and how to cook the meats. The meats come marinaded (my favorite is Basil and Miso) and in bite size pieces so that they cook fast on the grill. Definately try it out, they also have course menus for beginners. It comes with all the house favorites, try the Samuri!!! That's what we got and it was definately enough food for two. And cooking for yourself is the best part because you can cook everything to your liking. EAT HERE!!!

This restaurant seems to be for people who have never heard of grilling your own meat in front of you before. "Normal" bbq restaurants have portions that are actually fulfilling, not the dinky little dishes that come out at this restaurant. The taste is mediocre and the food is way overpriced. Do not go if you want to have a good dining experience.

I have been to a number of the Gyu-Kaku restaurants, but I recently moved to Orange County. For those that live in the OC, you probably know restaurants are lacking. I was thrilled to find out Gyu-Kaku was opening a restaurant in the OC. I went a few weeks ago and I can't wait to go back! The staff was great and really friendly. The managers stop by each table and make sure your dinner is going well. Customer service was outstanding and the food was even better. For those who have never tried Gyu-Kaku, you have to try the managers suggestions listed at each table. The ahi poke is to die for!

The branch in Sherman Oaks does not compare to Gyu Kaku in Huntington Beach. The service here has been warm and friendly, the food is delicious and the drinks are good. You wouldn't think it by looking at the outside of the restaurant but the interior is surprisingly big, yet the atmosphere is perfect for a romantic date if you don't mind a bit of occasional noise when the staff yells out commands and greetings in Japanese.

My first time at the restaurant required some explanation of the unique cooking style. Customers cook their own food on a grill set in the middle of each table. The veggies and meats are seasoned and marinated well making them super tasty. I couldn't get enough. The portion sizes are good too which is important. I also had a couple of cocktails but I like the Beach Spritzer the best.

The thing I have noticed about this restaurant is that the coworkers are all there for each other. When I first went, though the server was friendly and knowledgable, she seemed to forget about our table sometimes most likely due to the busy night they were having. Not to worry though, plenty of other servers came by and helped us out.

Overall, dining here is a treat and I would definitely bring friends back here again.

So my friends and I love trying new restaurants and one of them suggested Gyu-Kaku. We all like Korean BBQ so we gave it a whirl. The night began with our server asking if it was our first time and then explaining the menu and portion sizes (a la cart / sharing styles). He also told us that our meal would not be brought out all at once but in waves, which was a good thing because our order was a lil too much for our table to handle. not only did our server aid us in cooking procedures but the entire staff did as well. It was pretty cool how the staff engaged with the customers.
The servers, managers and even kitchen staff yelled out phrases in Japanese, some times in tandem and some times not (hehe). As busy as it got ( cannot stress making reservations on the weekend) we caught our server making some cheater chopsticks at another table for a couple not used to using chopsticks. I thought the service couldn't get any better but as we were leaving another server yelled for the entire restaurant's attention and got everyone to sing happy birthday to a patron. As far as food goes, the suggestions were right on target. The marinated yakiniku meats were all savory and the vegetables were awesome (try their suggestion of the mushroom melody and zuccini). If you don't mind waiting a little bit, the Bibimba rice dish is great! My only complaint about this restaurant is that I can't bring some of my more impatient friends. It is a great place to relax and enjoy a meal, NOT a place to rush a quick bite before a movie. I will definitely be coming back, especially for happy hour, 2 dollar draft beer!!! =3

I really enjoyed the prompt and warm service at the Huntingbeach Gyu Kaku. Our waitress was particularly helpful in explaining the various types of meats and marinades, making it a fun and enjoyable experience for myself and my party. I loved cooking my food to my exact specifications AND not smell like it after I left. I highly recommend this place for all sorts of occasions. Great way to start out the night on the town, with its stylish decor and ambiance.

I was blown away by the decor there. Contemporary, hip, and happening. I loved the music they played there too. No R&B or Pop, a plus for me. The food is amazing!!! The taste is wonderful especially since you grill the meat yourself. I never did that before, except BBQing. My girlfriend could not get enough of the Spicy Avocado salad, I personally just ate lots of meat. The Premium Kalbi melted in my mouth, and the tare sauce on it was just perfect. The best part of eating here was by the staff. They took us in and explained things so well to us that I felt that the next time I come in with my friends. I can do all the ordering and look like an expert. I have been to Japan and the one thing I missed about Japan was the service, this place is the closest thing I have seen here in the US with that kind of service. Oh and make sure to make reservations or else you might have to wait. I hate waiting. (>.<)

Dining at Gyu-Kaku in Huntington Beach was truly an experience for the senses. From the contemporary Japanese environment to the delectable menu items, our experience was one to remember.

Jaygo was our server. He explained the entire menu, as well as how to get the fullest from our meal, and gave great recommendations. The Ahi Poke was an item he strongly recommended, and we thoroughly enjoyed! Then, the ever so simple Gyu-Kaku salad was aperfect sample to the rest of the meal; it perfectly reflected theflavors and simplicity of the Japanese style of dining.

For our main courses, The Hirami Miso was perfectly marinated and the idea of cooking it on our own table made it very personal to our own prefrences. After a few dishes, our grill was unnoticably changed by our server, as to not blend flavors on the grill. The cool thing was, because of the way they have the grills set up, there is no lingering smoke or aromas that are typical of BBQ restaurants. My girlfriend was particularly fond of the Gyu Tan, which are thin slices of beeftongue. She orderdd it as a first main course, but ended up ordering another serving toward the end of the meal. Our favorite menu items were the Boneless Chicken Wings with Yuzu (Japanese pepper-citrus marinade), Lamb Basil, Bimbiba (Korean-style fried rice with a great BBQ flavor that cooks on your table in a stone-pot that got crispier as we let it develop), and the Portabello Mushrooms. Jaygo recommended 2 to 3 meats , vegetable and rice per person and he was right on the money.

The highlight of the meal, was definitely the Kobe Beef Filet. The tenderness is unparalleled to any other HB restaurant when it comes to juiciness and flavor. In all, me and my date both ordered what we wanted and ended up sharing it all!

My verdict: I'll definitely be back with my friends and family!

What a cool restaurant! Channel 4 recently did a story on this new restaurant that opened in Huntington Beach just off of Warner Avenue and Beach Boulevard called Gyu-Kaku. I went with some friends last night to check it out. I highly recommend it! I never knew the concept of Japanese Barbeque actually existed what?s even more exciting is that the customer is the chef. I totally thought I would burn my food but the servers are amazing, they walk you thru every step. A few suggestions, make reservations, try the Harami Miso,Shrimp Garlic and the Garlic Friend Noodles.

Pros: Great service, easy to park, the food is always hot, great value, check out their happy hour spcials too!

Cons: None! This place Rocks!

Whenever my boyfriend and I are in LA we?d eat at Gyu-Kaku Beverly Hills however finally they opened in Huntington Beach. The decor is stylish but warm their service is incredible and the food is still amazing. Service is really good here so if your not sure about something ask your server, they know everything. Happy Hour Specials are different than in LA, but cheaper prices are always better anyway!
