Pros: Affordable, friendly staff, good shows, $1 hot dogs!!!!!!!!

Cons: Cramped seats.

THEY HAVE LOWERED THEIR PRICES TO $2 BEFORE 6 AND $3 AFTER. PLUS THEY NOW HAVE HOT DOGS FOR A BUCK!! CAN'T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THAT. THERE SEEMS TO BE A WHOLE NEW STAFF WHO ARE WONDERFUL TO TALK TO. THEY REALLY SEEM TO LOVE TALKING ABOUT

Pros: GREAT PRICES AND FREE PARKING

Cons: PARKING LIMITED

The pricing is cheap and that's what you get, but really this is poor. Only go if you really don't want to pay for seeing the movie you are going to see. One theatre has the screen to the left centered of the the seats and there is a pole

This place could definitely use a makeover, but not if, as a result, they stop showing films that are hard to find elsewhere. They show a great mixture of art-house and mainstream films that are no longer running elsewhere. For instance,

The Academy 6 is a theater that I used to visit all the time when I lived in South Pasadena. The prices are unbeatable, and they play a lot of movies that you can't find anywhere else. They offer double features, so for $4 (matinee), you can see two movies...that can't be beat. They have a pretty good mixture of second run hit movies and independent films. Also, they don't play all the commercials and ads you would see at a normal multiplex, so that is a really good bonus. The only down side is the fact that the place is pretty run down and dingy looking. Otherwise, I would highly recommend the Academy 6.

PROS: can't beat the price
CONS: a little run down

When I was a kid, my dad took a second job in a movie theatre. I loved going to work with him, running up and down the aisles between shows, and hiding in the velvet curtains. The Academy 6 reminds me of those days. One gets a great movie, often independant or foreign films, at a discount price without all the noise at a traditional theatre. There are no annoying ads before the show or crummy music. It is always clean, and the popcorn actually tastes like popcorn.

PROS: Good prices, no crowds, no annoying advertising
CONS: small staff, ticket person usually sells the snacks

It's kind of sad, like a neglected dog once it's no longer a puppy. It needs a little love and attention, because it still has so much to offer. With a cheap movie price and a great selection of end-of-run films, it's definitely worth checking out.

Not only are their ticket prices just right for the frugal film buff, but this theatre is a "second-chance" theatre to see independent films that you missed at all the "nicer" more expensive theatres. The theatre itself is in need in repair, but it's what's on the screen that matters.

This would be a "dollar movie theatre" in the rest of the country (major metropolitan areas excluded), but in L.A. it's a steal at 6 bucks. The screens are small, and often off-center and, sometimes, the theatres aren't cleaned out between movie showings. Still, this is a great place to catch those art films that you hadn't gotten a chance to see during their limited release.

PROS: Great film selection, discount price
CONS: Small screens, poor sound quality

This is one of the last of those movie theatres that used to have one screen and a huge audience area that included a balcony and all that jazz. The theatre was divided over 15 years ago into 6 smaller viewing areas, and there is certainly nothing glamourous about the ambiance. What is great though, is the price. $5 bucks to see a movie AFTER 6pm. And there's free parking for theatre patrons behind the theatre. (Free parking in Pasadena!) Also great is the selection of movies. If you like independent films, but are torn between spending $10.50 or waiting and hoping that you can find an indie on video, this theatre solves your dilemma. I certainly hope this theatre stays open for a long time. Like I said, it's not very beautiful---really---it could use an overhaul, but for the price and the selection, you can't beat it!

Great Art-house Movies at almost half the cost of the other art house theaters like Leamlle's. Consessions are cheap and good. Staff is nice and cheerful

PROS: WONDERFUL MOVIES. I LOVE THIS THEATER AND THE MOVIES THEY PLAY
CONS: Very run down but a small price to pay considering the price. Also the theaters are in desperate need of repair and remodel.

This is one of the few second-run theaters in the Pasadena area. If you're reaction to "second-run" is "What?! But I want to see Shrek 5 on opening weekend!", then this theater is not for you.

This is also an arty theater, where you get to see cool stuff that's too obscure for the mall crowd. We saw "Nine Queens" here (the only place I could find it!), and I've had a soft spot for the Academy ever since.

The people who work here are oddballs, but they really seem to love their movies.

PROS: It's cheap.
The people are friendly.
Movies you can't see anywhere else.
CONS: A bit dingy.
Sticky floors.
Hard uncomfortable seats.

The rows are cramped, the seats are lumpy and hate your butt, and the parking lot scares little kids...but the selection of just-past-premiere movies is wonderful. Double-features = a great value, and the Academy remains one of L.A.'s

I just saw Kill Bill there. The projection sucked outrageously, the whole left half of the screen was a jumping blurry mess. We were nice, but when we reported the problem they were no-can-do defensive. Kind of a feel-bad place.

My best

Why would anyone want to actually go in this place and sit down? Just let it die.

I have seen Amelie, Magnolia and The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys here. There's never a long line and always a good movie to watch. Check the showtimes before going. There's a parking lot in the back.

Please support this kind of theater a bit of a dump (but in all the right ways) but with lots of heart and great movie selections. Plus the movies are always six buck. You cant beat that price!!
