The comments here really reflect my feelings about the place. The most favourable comments are generally from people who have enjoyed their first experience with Ethiopian food. If you have never had Ethiopian food, then this place is as good as any to start. It is a delightful, unique experience that everyone should try, if not here, then somewhere else. My wife and I love Ethiopian food, and seek out Ethiopian restaurants when we travel. I always consider them better than 90% of the alternatives, and hence give this 5 stars.

However, those who have had Ethiopian before are rating this place lower, and that is because they are rating it compared to other Ethiopian places. I would agree. The big thing this has going for it is the atmosphere. This is exactly what I expect for an Ethiopian restaurant. All basket seating, with no tables. I love it. On the other hand, I agree with those who note that the food is lacking flavour. The doro wot was by far the worst I have had, and lacked the zing that you would expect. Similarly, the injera was really bland, and didn't have any sourdough flavour at all. Then again, the beef tibs were really good, and among the best I have had, and there was a good veggie dish with green beans, potatos, and carrots. So it is a mixed bag.

But if you've never had Ethiopian before, these things should not stop you from trying it out. If I were in Boston again, I would probably check out another place, just to compare, but given the option of this place and most of the other restaurants in town, I'd choose Addis.

Who knew that Ethiopian food was so yummy and filling? Everything is served with spongey, crepe-like bread that is used to scoop up vegetable, meat and chicken dishes. Everything we tried was great!

Addis Red Sea is an amazing spot for dinner with friends, especially if your friends happen to be vegetarians. It's the only place I've ever had Ethiopian food, so I can't compare it, but I can state for the record that everything I've had there has been delicious. If you're thinking of going, but not sure--don't be intimidated! The spongy bread (Injera) made a perfect palette for the variety of vegetable stews and mixes we ordered for the table, some spicy, some with hints of sweetness, and all very rich and satisfying. The staff is courteous both on the phone and in person, and patiently answer questions even if there's a full house. The atmosphere upstairs is especially great. We were once seated in a cramped corner downstairs, but that was just so we could get some drinks started and our orders in sooner--they moved us to a more open table as soon as they could.

I'd recommend trying the honey wine as well. It's not to everyone's taste, but I thought it was pretty good and definitely unique.

Be prepared to eat with your hands, the bread they give you to eat with is awesome, kind of crepe-like. The food is really good, but its a meal for sharing so make sure you are comfortable with people you are eating with. Its a very cool restaurant.

I came here with a group of about 20 international club students to experience Ethiopian food. Although it is a very small restaurant, we booked in advance and they were able to accommodate our group. The staff was friendly and accommodating and the food was excellent. It was fun for our students to eat with their hands and to experience a different culture's cuisine.

Tonight, my friends asked to go to Addis because they told me it was a unique place and the food was good.
When I went, I was open minded and the place seemed quite busy on a saturday night and I was expecting "good" service and pretty good food. After waiting to be seated, the waitress came by quickly and was very cordial. My friends ordered a appetizer that was wayyyy too over priced and it was 2 pieces of crispy ground beef pastry smaller than your thumb that couldn't even fill up a baby.($6.95) It took 40 minutes to cook 2 mini hotpockets which was ridiculous. The appetizer was luke warm so they made a comment to the waitress and she said they were suppose to be like (luke warm food...are you serious?)that which was untrue because they had it before when it was hot and the most upsetting was that it was clearly fried and and she told us it was "pan cooked" which was impossible with that texture. We ordered together and got 5 dishes. By the way it was more than 50 minutes before the food was on the table. Food was not really too unique at all I thought but the atmosphere was with all the stuff on the walls. Food was sort of like a stew type but just seasoned heavily with herbs and spices. I truthfully had pretty high expectations after reading a bunch of reviews and afterwards, i do not think im going back again. I went to the 1 on tremont street and I have to say, the manager there is not too friendly and rude. Overall I did not have a great experience but I would recommend it to people who are curious to see what the place is like. Prepare to wait a long time for the food and they do not take reservations for less than 6 people.

I think the best of this restaurant is the experience. I am ethnic cuisine lover, I have tried so many different styles of food, and I still love this Ethiopian food most. The food that Addis Red Sea provides is also clean, and fresh. Price is reasonable and environment is great and neat. I highly recommended for someone who also likes to try something new, unique and special.

I really enjoyed my first experience with Ethiopian food in Addis Red Sea and i was not disappointed! The food is fantastic and price is reasonable. Their bread was just awesome and I also recommend the combo plate for 2, get variety and enough food to probably feed another person. I definitely will go back because this restaurant is already become one of my favorite spot in City.

This is a fun place to go. You sit on tiny stools with a small, low lying table (made like a woven basket) to share for eating. You eat with your hands, as is Ethiopian custom, using a a spongy, pancake-like flatbread. You take a small piece of the bread and scoop up one of the many stews or fried meat for eating. They serve various varieties of delicious and tender stews as well as meat based servings. Im not always sure what type of meat, whether it be lamb or beef, but it is always amazing. Ethiopian food is seasoned generously but not too spicy, just full of flavor. The environment is casual and fun and the wait staff are genuinely Ethiopian and very polite, helpful with suggestions and attentive. I always feel as though I am a special guest in their home; very welcomed. The Addis Red Sea is located in a very cool area of the South End. They have a honey wine which is authentic and delicious, which I love. The prices are very cheap especially considering the location. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!

The resturant is almost a little hard to find because of its location but its definitely worth the search! I ordered the wrong dish by accident and without hesitation they took it back and brought me what i wanted. It is exquisite Ethiopian food that I can rarely find.

I am always a huge fan for ethnic food, and it is my first time to try Ethiopian food in Addis Red Sea. Well the food in Addis Red Sea is really great and I really love their Goden Tibs. Just like others comment the services are somehow slow, but the place is beautiful, and if you are looking for unique dining experience, Addis Red Sea is definitely your best choice

We had such a wonderful evening at Red Sea. The ambiance was great, and the food even better. It was our first experience with Ethiopian cuisine, and we couldn't have enjoyed it more. The honey wine was to die for. The waitrons were lovely, and the whole dining experience was just wonderful. I highly recommend this restaurant!

If you're looking for a great place to eat without breaking the bank, this the place to do. I would anyone who goes there to try the Lega Tibs. It's a traditional African dish made with sauteed chunks of lamb.

I usually don??t experiment. I stick with Italian or Chinese usually. I was in Boston for a weekend and my wife convinced me to try to branch out, so we tried Addis red Sea because we heard it was good. I let my wife order because I know nothing about Ethiopian food and it was out of this world! The food was absolutely wonderful. I had no idea what exactly I was eating but it was so great! The steak tartar, Kitfo was amazing. All their food is very diverse and if you're thinking about trying Ethiopian, try Addis Red Sea! I really fell in love!

This place is a fun, casual night out. The seating is rather intimate, the food is interesting (and mostly tasty, though I'm not a fan of their cold fish dish), and the atmosphere is good. I'm not sure if it's authentic, but it's good!

Huge Addis fan here. I have only been to 3 different Ethiopian restaurants, but this is my favorite so far, and I prefer it to most other local restaurants. The food is great, there are plenty of options for both meat-eaters and vegetarians, the staff are very friendly, and the atmosphere is very inviting. I would highly recommend ordering a combo, and while I'm partial to the asa wat (fish) or doro wat (chicken) as the entree part of my combo, I usually randomly select the vegetarian sides to round out the combo--most of them are great! The spicy food is in fact spicy, so if you choose any of those options, make sure to get one or two blander sides as well. I always have some mango juice and save some for the end to help put out the fire. Again, by me, the restaurant is highly recommended.

While the ambiance was nice and service perfectly adequate, this was by far and away the most bland Ethiopian food I've ever had. Plus, I've never had injera that actually stuck to my fingers before. Wouldn't recommend it.

it's fun to be able to eat with your hands, like ethiopians do. but like my friend's friend said, one might feel bad eating ethiopian food knowing that most ethiopians these days don't have this much food to eat--w/ or w/o their hands.

food is mostly spicy, w/the usual ingredients (beef, lamb, chicken). the non-spicy lamb was the best out of all that we ordered. the raw beef dish didn't look raw at all, it was quite spicy instead.

the (unlimited) bread that comes w/the meal tastes good itself. but make sure you get a good size so that you can grab the food that's less than solid.

spices aside, the food isn't that much different from what we eat everyday (at least from an asian standpoint), but the procedure is what makes it unique. it's worth a try.

I live in Rhode Island and drove all the way to Boston for some Ethiopian food. I've had lots of Ethiopian food in the past and this is by far the worst I've ever had. The chicken tips tasted like plain, boiled chicken. No spices at all. And all the vegeterian dishes including the injera were completely plain. There seemed like there wasn't even any salt added. Not spicy, not flavorfull, didn't taste like anything. A complete disappointment. Don't go there. So far, the best Ethiopian I know of is in NYC - Queen of Sheba and Xoma.

The cottage-cheese like appetizer was AMAZING! It's definitely a must have. However, unlike other Ethiopian restaurants, their bread-wrap is served cold rather than tepid. It's okay but I prefer them to be warm. The collard greens dish is my favorite. Great price for the quality and quantity. Service is good but can get slow when the place gets crowded.

I had made a reservation for 10 at 7:00PM for a friend's birthday dinner. 8 of us arrived at around 6:55 and asked if we could be seated. They said they would only seat when the full party has arrived, which I guess is understandable. I fear that the other two would be late so I asked them how long they would hold the table for, and the host replied that they had to be there in 5 minutes! Most places hold reservations for at least 10-15 minutes. What kind of restaurant business actually expects their customers to actually arrive on time especially large parties?

Later as we were ordering, I wanted to order an appetizer instead of a meal since there were so many of us we could all just share and try different things on the menu. They told me they would charge me an extra $7 for sharing.

We brought a cake for her from Konditor Meister and it turns out that they don't accept cakes. They say that they actually sell cakes there so they don't allow cakes from outside. I was unaware of this so it was my fault. I asked them if they could just store it in the fridge for us until we finished eating and we will take it back. We left the restaurant, feeling unsatisfied with the food, and when we opened the box with the cake in it, we found our cake broken in half. It looked like it was dropped and they didn't even inform us.

I had a horrible time, their service was unbelievably bad. The only good thing about it was that it was an interesting atmosphere and novel experience.

Good location. Slow service. Weird rules.
We (16 people, many international) were there Nov. 18 (2007). We made a reservation for 9:30 PM. They let us in at 9:55 PM (I can understand 5-10 min delay, but 25 mins. OMG.. what is the point of making a reservation?) They served our food at 10:50 PM and they said they are going to close in 10 minutes!!!
One of our friends said he didn't want to eat, he just wanted to drink beer. They said "NO, you can't.. otherwise we will charge you $7 for taking a seat"...
I chose #11, which was OK. But most of the people complained that their meat was too cooked or too dry.
As a result, that was an interesting experience but I won't go back to that restaurant again..

Had reservations for a table of 8 @ 7:30. Wasn't seated until 8. Drink orders were taken at 8:20. Drinks arrived at 8:35. Food order not taken until 9:05. At this point, we spoke to the hostess to inform her of the exorbitantly slow service that we were receiving, to which we received a reply of "you haven't been here for an hour" in a rude voice. In any case, food finally arrives at 9:45. This is unacceptable. If not for the service, the experience would have been a nice one. The food was good and the atmosphere was relaxing. However, I wouldn't recommend coming here for if you're very hungry and not in the mood to deal with attitude from the staff.

I've had Ethiopian in other restaurants, and it's always been my favorite no matter where I am, but nobody tops Addis red sea for me. The place is beautiful, they really immerse you in the experience. Low stools, woven tables, candlelight...(Awesome for romantic evenings, especially for the adventurous foodie!) A note to the squeamish...yes, you eat with your hands, and yes, everyone eats off the same plate, but that's part of the experience! There's really an emphasis on dining being an intimate experience you enjoy with friends, not a quick in and out with your waiter breathing down your neck like in some American chain restaurants. The wait staff are always prompt with orders, even on busy nights, and your water glass is never empty, but after that they leave you the hell alone --and I love that. This has quickly become my fall back place for a romantic evening with my BF because we both know we'll always have a wonderful, romantic night.

PS--oh, and show up hungry, because you will always leave stuffed, no matter what!

Pros: Food, service, aesthetic...oh, and try the honey wine, it really compliments the food!

Cons: um...does being too full count as a con?

Maybe it was because it was my first time trying Ethiopian cuisine but nothing really stood out for me. I guess I could give it another go and re-rate my experience.

I had heard from several people about Addis and the unique dining experience there, so my gf and one of our favorite other couples decided to give it a try. Not only did we have a fun evening, we've been looking forward to our next trip there. The Setting: Simple, basement-oriented restaurant. Some African art adorns the walls, but nothing fancy, just simple decor. The Service: Not very communicative, but the staff are Ethiopian and thus not native American-English speakers. Food did come out prompty and correctly. Also great that we were able to get right in for a table (we did go on a Sunday night). The Food: Here's the best part. All the food came out on a big platter that everyone shared and ate off. It was fun to dip into the food with your hands and sponge-like bread. The food itself is very simple, but good, consisting of paste-like items or potate based foods. Very similar to Indian (but not spicy), or Greek. Everyone enjoyed the experience, and we tried quite a few of their vegetarian offerings. Overall: A unique dining experience for open-minded people, and great for a group setting.

This place had great ethiopian food and its not hard to see why this place gets so easily packed. I arrived on a Wednesday night at 9 pm and was seated in short as the restaurant seemed mostly half empty...15 minutes later it was packed....it was a great place for 2-4 people...great to have a romantic date....it was a great experience overall and the only unfortunate part was that they ran out of their ethiopian wine which i was looking forward to trying...i am already suggesting it to my friends and family as a must try!

If you want Ethiopian food, this is the only place worth going to in Boston/Cambridge. Great for vegatarians or meat lovers, the food and great and the service attentive. If you have never tried Ethiopian, then you should go here immediately and give it a try. You won't regret it.

Pros: Best Ethiopian in Greater Boston.

I've been to Addis twice in the past month and have enjoyed the great food, atmosphere and waitstaff more and more. The concept of eating with one's hands at first can be a turn-off but it ends up adding to the experience. Both the meat and vegetarians dishes are very tasty and the experience as a whole was thrilling. Try to go sometime during the week- Friday and Saturday nights tend to have a good 45 minute wait.

So, I read all the reviews about the service being slow, and I have to say that i didn't notice at all. This is the type of place where you go to eat, and you want to have some wine and chat and when the food comes it comes...My recommendation for women would be do not wear low cut pants, because you are going to be sitting on a stool most likely. The food is great and the bread is really nice. I don't think each person needs to order something, we all shared...so if there were a group of you i would estimate 4 dishes for every 5 people. Happy eating!

We have been to Addis Red Sea about four times and each time hoped that the service would improve. The food is ok, but the service is truly awful. They are extremely slow, dont respond well to questions or requests and dont help explain the food, which is pretty exotic. It is quite dark in the restaurant and there are steep stairs to get to the restrooms. We are so disappointed and tired with the service we will not be returning. There are other ethnic restaurants in the area that are much, much better.

Pros: only one of two Ethiopian restaurants in the Boston area

Cons: poor service, no parking

We visited Addis Red Sea last night, and were completely floored! The food was fantastic, with a very homely feel to it. The service was pretty decent. We didn't wait more than 10 minutes to be seated. I would definitely go back there again... and again... and again...

The restaurant *is* slow and very often crowded. There is usually quite a wait. But the food makes it all worth it!

I'm not going to repeat what everyone has said about the food; here are a few other thoughts:

Not recommended for germphobes as everything is served communally.
Great for groups and those new to Ethiopian -- plenty of fish and chicken available if goat or lamb is too weird.

This was a fun place to go with a group (though it was very crowded and despite having a reservation, we had to wait a bit). It is the best Ethiopian food I know of in Boston, though it might not hold up as well next to top Ethiopian restaurants in other cities. The service was slow, but since we were enjoying ourselves it didn't matter. And our waitress was very nice and informative. I might agree with some earlier comments about value for the price, however.

The food at this place is actually very good and reasonably priced. The service is among the worst I have ever had. I have actually been 3 times (because I love the food) and everytime I promise myself I won't go back because the service is so damn slow (even when the restaurant is half empty). If you are going to go, go early and bring some snacks because you won't be eating any time soon.

I like -

Great place for ethnic food. I had high expectations from this place - it lived up to it.
Inexpensive compared to other food places around this area.
Lot of food options for the indian vegitarians.
Food is very close to indian food with african flavor.
Injera is very nice with vegitable / meat side dishes. Combination option at the end of the menu is highly recommended.
Bhaklava & Coffee are great for desert

I didn't like -

They don't take reservation for a group less than 6. Had to wait for an hour to get in.
Chairs used for seating are too small and no back support. Not good for sitting for longer duration.
Very small place and conjected - tables are arranged too close to each other.

My brother and I visited this restaurant because of the many reviews others gave it. We were not disappointed! The food was wonderful, the staff was warm and friendly, and the all around experience was one we will not soon forget! This was our first experience with Ethiopian food and it will not be our last!

Intimate, casual, very unique place to go/take someone. It's best if you get a combo with someone and share. Love the flat bread. There's no utensils, you just use the bread to pick up the food. The small tables and dimly lit atmosphere is good for a small group of friends. I don't think more than four would fit at a table though. Great decor and atmosphere.
