I love going to this place for great beer and pretty good food. The only thing I would not recommend is the hummus - it was a bit too plain for me.

THe setting is a bit loud, can get crowded during weekends and nights. Because of this i wouldn't recommend taking a first date there if you are planning on talking to them a lot.

Nice central location, good beer, good food. Three thumbs up

Ok, so gooder and goodest aren't actually words but when you start out here, as soon as you walk in the door, it's good. As your visit progresses, it gets better and better!

My first time at HB was a small group of friends. I tried a peach beer that was really good. The food was good, and the service was good.

Today as me and my husband were walking towards Union Square he mentioned that he was hungry. I remembered HB and suggested it. I'm sooo glad I did! He ordered the Bison burger with fries and I ordered the HB burger. I also tried one of the seasonal beers. Lunch was excellent! Both our burgers were incredibly delicious, we both agreed they were probably the best we've ever had. Our server, Liz, was super helpful and friendly and she got a nice tip because of it. Overall, a great experience and we'll definitely go back.

the turkey burger wasn't bad just blah....otherwise nothing but raves. my server was fantastic--part therapist, part comedian, she was perfect. sorry i don't know her name or else i'd gush on her. i went in alone after shopping at the farmers market across the street. i was seated quickly and actually ordered a beer because i'd seen a lot of ads for their 'summer brew' which is apricot beer. as a total girlie girl, first, i don't like beer normally and secondly, there was no apricot flavor noted...but the french fries were delicious. the turkey burger was well-done which is not always the case and with turkey you want it done, so kudos on that. just NO flavoring on it which disappointed me. but again, i add more love in my kudos for that killer RAD cranberry ketchup. that stuff should be offered as an I.V. drip. it's that good! i could buy that cranberry ketchup on its own and slather it on food at home. the bill was handled quickly and the easy vibe was enhanced by how many families were dining around me. everyone just seemed really happy, both diners and servers. the runner who brought out my food was a hottie, too. great on the eyes but not friendly at all. with guys like that i could totally be a cougar. LOL this is just a great place to take someone who likes to drink. i love this place. it's a narrow-shaped room but i was in towards the back and it was a bit dark back there. if you want more natural lighting, i'd suggest you sit up near the entrance or better yet, outside! GO HERE. you will love it. the only reason i gave 4 not 5 stars was the lackluster turkey flavoring/seasoning and the fact that i don't like sports much and of course many TVs were blasting super hetero sports. this is not a bad thing against the place, just that for me a sports bar is not normally my cup of tea....which makes it all the more impressive that i would go here by choice. again, killer fries and top service. ENJOY.

I was at Heartland the other night and had a great time. I had fried pickles and Oatmeal stout. Both were really good, especially the beer. The service was pretty good too. I am defiantly going to make this regular spot for beer and a bite to eat.

I would recommend this restaurant for a beer and burger when in the Union Square area. It can get a little crowded, but the service is usually quite accommodating.

My husband and I were going to see a show last night in the city and decided to go to Heartland Brewery in Union Square for a casual dinner... we were not disappointed. We came in and were meeted by the hostess and seated right away. Our waitress, I think her name was Mandy, was super friendly and attentive. We told her we were seeing a show and couldn't be late and she assured us we would be out on time. I was in the mood for a burger and she recommended the Buffalo Burger - med rare. It was great! Myabe one of the best burgers I have ever had. We also had some beers... The restaurant brews it's own beers so I wasn't sure what to pick but, after reading their beer menu I decided on the Indian River Light. It was delicious and refreshing! The overall experience was excellent and we will definitely be back there soon!

I went with a friend for a late lunch the other day.. Arrived around 4p. Found a seat easily, service was fine enough. We started with the nachos, which sounded great on the menu (beef, cheese, veggie chili, jalapenos, etc). They arrived and the "beef" looked like it was ladeled out of a greasy vat that had been over a burner for the past couple hours. The nachos themselves were already wilted and moist. The entire platter looked like it was from the cooler, then into the microwave for 5mins.

I ordered a burger for the main course. A simple hamburger cooked medium with a side of fries and a side of ranch dressing. *sigh* Undercooked by about 5mins! It was rare at best (except for the inch around the edge). And the fries looked like they were more oil than potato. The ranch dressing was ok tho!

Maybe it was just because it was a downtime between rushes, but I've always thought that the quality should be there with Every dish out of the kitchen - regardless of the time of day. So if it's during a rush, maybe you'll have more luck., but otherwise, don't bother!

Yesterday was my first visit back to the Heartland in a couple of years, sad to say it will be a while before i go back. Upon our arrival(it was not crowded) the hostess just pointed to pick whatever table we wanted without setting any menus down. We sat there for 10 minutes until i got up and when to her and asked if i could 'borrow' 2 menus for us to look at. Then we still waited a good time befroe a waitress came over to ask us our order(even though she was very nice). We oredered from the brunch menu, it was horrible. Everything was tasteless, and those horrifying cheese grits have got to go, and you think they could spare some more canadian bacon, thin and small, thankfully the beer was good. Overall i will inform friends to stay away.

This is my first time at the Union Square location. I must say I have to disagree with the reviewer who claimed waitresses were rude. My two friends and I arrived and were told about the seating regulations (which is acceptable, you need more space for dinner than for appetizers) we waited for 5 minutes and got a table at the lower level.
The waitress was nice and attentive even when my friend who suffered a sudden drop in her BP lost consciousness, the manager helped carrying her to a couch, called ambulance, and refused to take neither a tip nor the pay for the tab (actually we drank only 1/3 of the samplings but finished the appetizers) even after my friend recovered and insisted on paying. Extremely amicable waitress and manager

Two thumbs up!
I give you guys 2 thumbs up

While in NY, we went here because we love to try new beer. We decided on the sampler and were so very pleased. The IPA was yucky, but I don't like any IPAs so that was not a surprise. Their light beer has king of a citrus taste to it. I was great. The food was really good as well. The waitstaff was excellent. I loved it. Thanks!

We went to Heartland Brewery today and 1st floor where the bar area is was packed with no where for us to sit. We saw a bunch of open seats upstairs so we went towards them. Before we got there a waiter asked us what type of food we intended to eat. We only wanted a few appetizers and a couple of beers since it was around 4:00 p.m. no where near dinner time. The rude waiter proceeded to tell us that we could only sit upstairs if we had a full dinner. There were no tables left downstairs. What is up with that? We were about to spend at least 50 dollars on drinks and appetizers. We left and will never come here again!

I stop by the Heartland Brewery in Union Square seemingly 50% of the times I go to Union Square. It's never disappointed me. The waits have been lengthy at times, but any frustration is quickly washed away with a few gulps of one of their seasonal brews. If you go in the winter, be sure to try the Bavarian Black stout, or, in the autumn, the Smilin' Pumpkin Ale. The setup indoors is interesting, with a second floor balcony looking over the bustling bar below. Weather permiting, the outdoor seating offers a great spot from which one can do some serious people-watching in and around Union Square. The food is typical pub grub. The burgers and fries are great, as well as the soups and salads. Most of all, though, I go for the beer.

The food and beer were quite good but since they tack on gratuity for larger groups, the staff has little incentive to pay attention to certain customers. We had one missing entree for 20 minutes and had to ask three different staff members about it. They all seemed nonplussed. When it finally arrived there was no apology, no offer of a "make good." And, we had a difficult time even ordering more drinks b/c our waitress was attending to other tables most of the time. If they improved customer service, this would be a great place....esp. for a chain.

I went there for a late afternoon lunch on a Thursday. The place was nearly empty but I decided to sit at the bar. I ordered the Seasonal Sampler from the beer menu. It comes with five ounce samples of the bar's five house brews and three additional beers, which change every couple of months. This costs $12.95.

For lunch I ordered two appetizers - buffalo chicken spring rolls ($8.50) and steamed ginger chicken wontons ($7.50). The buffalo wings were delicious. They came with a buffalo dipping sauce that was spicy but not too hot. The chicken wontons were good, but not great. They didn't have a definitive taste so I will not order them again.

I ordered the brownie sundae for dessert. The brownie comes warm with chocolate (not vanilla) ice cream, then smothered in chocolate sauce and topped with whipped cream. It was so damned good.

Nice beer selection-- especially the porter, thick oatmeally and not too sweet. It's crowded, but we managed to score an outside table (tables). Our waitress was efficient, but not the friendliest person in the world. People at other tables were nice and neighborly, with fewer tourists than you might expect at a Union Square pub-- and a chain at that. --Drink Club is a roving group on NYC drinkers

My previous (twice at the most) visits there were okay, not great, just okay.
But the most recent one was terrible.
The lady waitstaff that was suppose to serve us (henceforth the word waitress)was just horrible, rude, ignorant. Beer was okay, but it was the most unpleasant experience ever.

The atmosphere at this new Manhattan bar/restaurant is perfect for groups, dates and friends. The after work crowd is also prevalent. Try the pumpkin ale in the fall and pay attention to ads across the city showing off new types of ale.

Smiling Pumpkin Ale is the only gourd beer I could drink everyday. H-land really balances it well with honey, cloves and hops. I make beer at home and I 'm trying to get my pumpkin beer to be this drinkable.

The unique thing they do is mix it with their stout for Stumpkin. This is really good!

Reasonable prices considering the trendyness of the neighborhood. Can get really crowded but this tends to happen in most places in nyc.
The $10 beer sampler of their home brews is a pretty good deal; for a couple more dollars you get everything the $10 sampler has plus whatever seasonal brews they happen to have; considering the quality of their beers it really is a bargain. The food was pretty good pub grub as I recall. I've been meaning to visit again soon. I've never been to the other Heartland branches so maybe I'll them up first before I come back to this one.
This place is definately worth a try.

Buffalo Chicken Spring Rolls are a must and if you are not in the mood to have one of their delicious homemade beers - their Root Beer soda is incredible - they make that too. This place has a classy feel and at the same time it's warm and comfortable. Besides the beer that is the best, they make great mix drinks too - their mixologist makes a mean apple martini! Whenever I go there I feel like I have been invited to a intimate party.

I had been here several times in the past, and the service was always ok. The last time, our appetizer came after our entree, and after telling the waiter (nicely!), he offered to give us a round of drinks on him. But, he never came back to our table, and completely ignored us, while taking care of all the tables around us. It became so blatant, and after waiting almost 45 minutes, with empty glasses and no check, I asked for the manager. He took care of our drinks and appetizer, but didn't give an explanation as to why the waiter was being so rude. I advise anyone to skip this place and go somewhere else for pub food. Oh yeah, and it's so over-priced too. won't be going back to Heartland...

I had been here several times in the past, and the service was always ok. The last time, our appetizer came after our entree, and after telling the waiter (nicely!), he offered to give us a round of drinks on him. But, he never came back to our table, and completely ignored us, while taking care of all the tables around us. Cons: over-priced, bad service

not many take to this, but their buffalo burgers are great. add some bacon & cheese & this beats big mac or bk's. onion rings & calamari were very good. didn't try their beer cause portions are very filling. wife had the salad which was ok. our little 1 yr. old babe was cranky but they didn't mind - they brought over some fruit which was nice. place can be quite noisy - it's a hangout. if you sit upstairs, you can be forgotten. it is a little pricey tho. SUM IT: I think this is worth trying at least once - if not for the bar scene.

Went on a Thursday night and it was reasonably crowded. The microbrews were really good (however the pale ale was a little bitter). Also, the food was good. Would definitely go back, plus great Union Square location.

I went there on a Friday night afterwork for drinks/appetizers. The mirco-brew beer was pretty good. The appetizers was VERY good. We ordered the chicken fingers, BBQ chicken quesadillas and onion rings. We were able to get a table quickly inside the restaurant. They offer a smoking and a "non" smoking section. They also have tables outside to enjoy the weather when it is nice and to soak up the scenary and people watch as they roam around Union Square.....these tables are "first come, first serve" So when the weather is nice, they are hard to come by.

Pros: Good beer selection, Great atmosphere, Trendy

Stopped in for a beer. Had the red rooster ale, my fiance had the apricot something or other. Beer was decent...typical microbrew. Atmosphere was good...music was OK, but don't remember much about it. Restaurant was croweded (sat night).

Beers were $6 a pint, but you could order half pints, and samplers. Not a bad place to go...
