Ernie is the most hateful, despicable, evil witch of a person that I have ever met. She makes every human she encounters feel like they are stupid, and not worth the poop the animals sleep in over there. She even treats volunteers like they are annoying her and like they are morons. I watched her yanking young puppies up into her arms by their FEET! The small dogs sleep inside locked bedrooms in large numbers with poop on every square foot of carpet. The odor knocks you over. They have to eat food left out in the rain that has become a soggy mess because they don't want to waste anything but why not keep the food covered from the rain? I know the animals are better in there than running loose homeless but that woman is a beast. A truly awful person to interact with.

Horrible person running this place. My friend was told she could not adopt because she could not remember the name of heart worm meds her previous pet had taken. She asked for the vets name to confirm that her dog had been taken heart worm meds and then didn't bother to call the vet. just told her she wouldn't let her adopt because she didn't believe she would take good care of the dog. This woman is not only stupid but is on a power trip. She doesn't realize that she is hurting the animals at this facility. She is giving the center a bad name and reputation. I can't even imagine how many animals have missed out on a happy home because of this horrible woman. My friend could have provided an excellent home and been a great adoptive mother for one of these shelter dogs. I really hope the fact that my friend could not speak any english had nothing to do with her being dismissed as quickly as she was. would like to know the rate of hispanics and blacks being allowed to adopt as opposed to other races.

First I want to start by saying wow this place is in bad shape and seriously overcrowded with poor animals. My husband and I decided we wanted to adopt a dog from this place because this place needs help and so do the animals so I started by filling out this crazy application and then decided before we went any further, as in paying the lady we wanted to see the dog and make sure that it wasn't gonna die on us on the ride home. After visiting with the dog for awhile we decided he would be perfectly happy and at home with us (on our bed most likely where our other two dogs sleep). My husband went back into the office to pay for the dog and be on our way.

The lady starts by saying to him I can't adopt this dog to you. The five foot chain link fence doesn't have a gate on the driveway. My husband looked at her a little funny and ask "how would you know if I have a gate on my fence or not?" She says " O I google mapped your house." Anyone who has ever used google before knows that these pictures don't get updated very often. Besides that the gate has been up for over a year to keep our other two dogs in the front yard. O wait and there's a fully fenced in back yard to where most dogs go outside anyway.

The second thing the lady says when she can not dispute that anymore is " I also called your vet to and they told me you had a dog with parvo 7 months ago." Ok so first thing on this point. I fully understand how devistating parvo is to a dog. I also know that with a little more knowledge on an owners part parvo is very treatable and not nearly as nasty as its been made out to be. Second point the dog that we have that had parvo was a rescue from another not so great rescue in corpus. We adopted him as a puppy and brought him home just to find out the same day he was already in very bad shape. To make this story short WE DID OUR HOMEWORK!!!!!! our poor parvo puppy is an awesome dog 7 months later and loves life sleeping in our bed. Third our other dog did not get parvo and she was maybe four months old because WE DID OUR HOMEWORK!!!!
With that being said parvo does kill dogs but I'd be willing to bet people know more happy parvo surviors than not. Fourth no one that works there could ever tell you that there hasn't been a case of parvo in the last year, if not every day or week. Finally the lady would not adopt us the dog because we had a dog with parvo (that we got from another not so great rescue in corpus) in the last 7 months.

Both of our two wonderful dogs that are both rescues are doing great even the one that had parvo. They sleep with us at night live in an air conditioned house full time and are both fat and happy with a big front and back yard to play in.

I'm not really sure why a place that is in such poor condition with the smell of dead animals everywhere. If you've been there you know what I mean, can pass snap judgements on good loving godly people about how we're not fit to care for the animal. These animals are not your pets!!!!! ADOPT them to good people and end there crappy lives at your rescue. Sorry about the long winded rant but damn and WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, we adopted our little puppy just a few days ago. Sunday, if I remember correctly. Well, we went through the whole entire process, which took longer than an business interview, and after an hour or two, we were finally accepted. Well, first things first, we went home, we started potty training him that night, we checked his stools and what we found were white worms squirming throughout his poo. The second day, we found him infested with ticks! Gross, I know. Well yesterday, Thursday, around 4 pm he wasn't acting himself. Lazy, tiresome, not drinking nor eating, he wouldn't play with us, instead, he watched my other dog as she was playing with his toys and he didn't seem to get too defensive. Well then, he was uncontrollably vomiting clear liquid, that smelt unbelievable. At first we thought he may have chewed and ate part of his chew toy, but we were proven wrong when he started to spew out clear liquid, blood and worms. So, we immediately took him to the Vet. He tested positive for Parvo, which would cost an arm and a leg for hospitalization and isolation, so we decided on the home treatment. (I'll update this to let anyone know if it worked or not.) The Vet said that he had a 50/50 chance, with or without hospitalization since he was a puppy. After the doctor came in and taught us how to treat our little puppy, he stopped and looked around as he walked us out and said quietly. "You know, alot of dogs that come from PeeWee's has parvo." Well, great! Even the doctor admitted it! So, as a warning, I suggest you don't adopt animals from there, only because they could be infected with Parvo. Honestly, I feel like we've been set up for heartbreak.

**update** Our little Foster died.

This place is awesome and Ernie is a SAINT! She's an animal person, not a people person. Those animals may not have designer beds or the fanciest of surroundings, but consider the alternative. I have a lot of knowledge on cats especially and that cat house may not look 5-star to you, but to an unloved, homeless cat, it's heaven! Things to climb and scratch, places to hide, food, clean water and big litter boxes. The dogs in the enclosures were all passed out when I went, they weren't pacing around in circles or barking excessively. I've seen animals in zoos and such that are clearly distressed. I did not see that in ANY of these animals. Once I saw it I immediately wrote a check and am planning a trip to Goodwill to buy some work clothes so I can start volunteering! She accepted the cat and four kittens I brought her, no questions asked, set them up in a nice little indoor cat area where the babies can be safe with their mama. Again, not the fanciest place, but way better than the puddle I pulled them out of in the pouring rain. If you are *offended* by these people, go somewhere else for adoption, like the flea market, there are throw away animals out there every weekend, they won't ask you any questions. But please, PLEASE whatever you do, write these folks a check! Anyone who really knows and cares about animals can clearly feel the love here. I was absolutely devastated about having to bring the cats there, but once I saw it, I felt a million times better! One more thing, these people that are saying things like "this is no way to run a business"?! IT IS NOT A BUSINESS!!! THERE IS NO PROFIT! It is a safe place for animals and they want to make sure they aren't going to end up by the side of the highway again. Check YOUR feelings at the door and think about the animals. Much much love. Send a donation!!! :) They even have a PayPal option on the website which is:

Peewees helps their animals and gives them more than they had before they saved them. If you have not seen where shelter animals come from then do not judge this shelter! I found a pug that had a horribly messed up eye and I called ??that lady?(if you do not even know her name who is rude?) at Peewees and she said I could bring her by in the morning. They took take care of Pugly and I saw her in the next newsletter and they got her eye removed and they fixed up that dog and made her happy! I have taken dogs to Ernie and she takes care of them! She wants to help the animals first (she doesn??t play stupid human games)! Peewees wants to find these abandoned animals FOREVER homes not homes that will give up on them when they aren??t ??cute? anymore or have children (when you adopt an animal they are your child)! These animals do not deserve to go to homes that will just dump them again when things get tough (would you do that with a child?). You do not need to be PERFECT to adopt a new family member from here you just need to be knowledgeable about basic pet care! And yes some pets need extra care and have higher living requirements (like a 3 legged dog) because a veterinarian has advised that they need to be inside pets. And all of you complaining about I cried leaving this dog behind did any of you go back and try to apply again after consulting your veterinarian or looking up information on the internet? No you went home and gave up on that animal. You do not have to like the workers to adopt an animal from here that is petty and you obviously do not care about the poor baby you cry for. And the workers do not handle the animals inhumanely (how do you handle your children?) because some animals handle their young by scruffing and biting to teach proper etiquette (the animal world is a different place). Also the Gulf Coast Human Society is a great facility but they also have animals that are ??purebred? at $400+. They have a lot more funding from the government and Denny Bales. Animals at Peewees probably arrive with diseases just like they would at Gulf Coast because they were dumped. Peewees runs on very few workers, volunteers, and few donations (some may say few donations because they are rude here but does that matter when the animals are receiving your benefits?). Every time that I take an animal I give a small donation and the animal is taken care of! My parents have also personally adopted a dog from this facility 11 years ago. They did not pass the application process at first because the dog had a disease that they needed to understand before adopting her. They did some research and consulted our vet and went back and adopted her. That dog is now a happy 12 year old dog with two brothers that were found on the streets (one because he had heartworms and seizures so he was dumped). If Peewees did not rescue this dog my life would be very different and I respect them for turning down an application from a person that was not ready (until they researched and CAME BACK). Peewees puts the needs of the animals FIRST not the possibility of offending the people that want to adopt a pet within a day because they are ??cute?! Be dedicated, knowledgeable, and loving and Peewees will allow you to adopt a new family member (so the animal will have a FOREVER home)!

We went to Peewee's this afternoon looking for a dog to join our family. We arrived and I was very sad by the condition of the place. The animals outside are in pens with 3 to 5 dogs in each pen. All have dog houses or truck toppers in them as shelter. We went into the office no one was there. We called and the lady was rude on the phone. She came and aske. My husband and I some question. Have we ever had a dog before? Yes. What happened to that dog. Well she is with our friends in Colorado and they want to keep her. Oh we'll we give dogs to those that give away dogs. Even though the dog we had before we had for 11 years and the animals. This place is such a joke. I would like to know how this place is still open and accepting animals. Why turn down families that want to adopt an animal and make them a member of their family. This place should be overjoyed that someone wants to adopt a pet.

This is out of the ordinary for me but I felt the need to let other people know how I felt today so they wouldn't go through the same thing. I went to the pet store today to see if I could adopt a pet for my. Mom as a gift. After speaking with the workers they explained to me that this was something they could not do because they needed to know she would take care of the pet. I fully understood and decided to adopt a pet for myself instead. I had found a puppy that was the spitting image of a beloved pet a had lost a year ago. Seeing this puppy immediately brought me to tears and I was instantly in love. I asked to adopt the puppy. After 1 1/2 hours of questions and some paperwork the worker came back and told me that because I had previously had a dog they wanted to speak with myvet and wanted his phone number. Silly thing is that my previous pet passed after 15 years with him and they made me feel as if it was my fault. nd that's why they needed to speak with him. Of coarse vet was closed and I was denied the adoption. I left petsmart crying and humiliated by the barrage of questions and the hoops I was jumping through to adopt this puppy. It makes me feel as though I was the one that gave him up and needed to prove my worthyness to get him back. I'm not a vet so I don't know all of the different illnesses a dog can get but I know well enough that if your pet doesn't feel well or act normal you take them to the doctor. I was made to feel as though I should know exactly what diseases he would get. I have children and don't know all of the things that would go wrong with them but I know they need vaccines and take them to doctor when they need them or they get sick. And if you would have asked you could have seen they are up to date on their shots. This pet would have been loved and cared for by my entire family for many many years and it saddens me terribly that I left him behind in petsmart today. It still brings me to tears as I'm writing this. So anyone wanting to adopt a pet needs to be PERFECT or you can not adopt a pet from this organization.

VERY DISAPPOINTING! I saw a 3-legged dog that melted my heart when Peewee's was at a pet store to "help" the animals find homes. I contacted them and went in to fill out a RIDICULOUS application: where I worked, where I'm living, what happened to my last pet (i had a cat for 20 yrs/his sister for 18 yrs. Sounds like a good record, doesn't it?), where I'd be with my new pet, where I'd keep it, how many children live in the house, every possible question about heart worms (but they have no information to teach you about how to take care of them, "Look it up on the internet."), and on and on and on. Everything they asked me seemed like they were doing their best for me NOT to adopt. I am a caregiver to my father and since his dog wasn't up to date (my mother passed away and honestly the last thing I thought of was to ask my father if his dog was up to date). I was HONEST and told them that I would keep the dog both inside and out. That wasn't good enough, they wanted it inside at all times (funny, most if not all dogs are outside in cages together, no grass just dirt and the only covers were cheap, old camper tops and they are telling me how to care for a dog that caught my heart). He said if I didn't get approved for the dog, I "can probably get a cat. "When the "lady" came back to call me to let me know if I was approved, she said without any compassion,"You weren't approved." Mono tone, no care. "Not approved." I was shocked! The way she sounded I knew there was no reason to try and talk her into it. How many people do you know that are willing to pay $100 for a female dog with 3 legs? Are you going to tell me that a dog that survived losing a leg can't survive the weather where it lives?
When I told my friend about my experience, she said her mom had the same problems with them: rude, ridiculous reasons for not letting her have a dog (she had grandchildren living with her so "She had too many children in the house. Not approved."
Do they have an amount of dogs that they need there to keep getting money from the gov't? What's their deal trying so hard not to get homes for the dogs when they keep saying that they are "full". So sad for those that truly want to help give homes and love to 3-legged dogs or any of their other animals. I am telling everyone about peewee's manner of "helping' pets and "potential" owners.

I was in a corner store and there was cat up on shelf I helped them get it in a cage and offered to find a place...I called several places and was turned down they had no room. I called Pee Wee's and yes the lady on the phone sounded a bit stressed but she said yes. I drove up to PeeWee's having a idea in my mind of well air condition clean place but it was a bit rustic. I am not a cat person but on the drive over me and the cat cried the whole way lol...I was worried if I was doing the right thing I still am a bit but I'm praying I did...The young man that helped me with the cat was very compassionate and didn't roll his eyes at my tears he told me they would get the cat shots and what not and place them in a house they have that is air condition and would not kill him...is this what i invisioned NO but I agree with the bottom reviewer maybe with more donations they can do more and that is not to take away from what they are already doing. I donated a small amount and will continue to donate via the internet...I'm greatfull Peewee's I was home sick with my dog actually had her with me when i went into the store and saw the cat.. and while it's not some great glassed in cat palace it's not killing and I did see compassion in the eyes of the man that took the cat...so I will donate and pray and hope that others will do the same.

I am from California and we came out to help my tia look for a puppy and we looked everywhere, then we came across this place an I am sorry but their service was just complete bull. There was 2 women one was a girl guy and handled the smaller dogs and was very very ride and abusive towards the animals. She would pick them up by the neck and drag them then kick them into the kennels. It was soo sad because I am a huge pet lover myself. These are God's animals just as we are his kids and deserve to be treated better. Those women should be fired!

Business Response:

Thank you for voicing your concern, but you miscontrued how the two women handled the animals. Some have to be handled a certain way so we can avoid being bitten, or possibly losing hold of the animal. Sometimes feet have to be used to carefully scoot animals into kennels, or to keep dogs from running out. These two women personally care for the Peewees' sick, injured, and crippled dogs in their own home on their own dime! If you have not worked in a shelter, please don't judge from your computer chair.

Horrible! The lady who runs Peewees in Corpus is absolutely terrible! She is the rudest person I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. Unfortunately we had to bring our dog back to Peewees, as we had a new born child and had to move into an apartment. Originally when I had called, the lady was already extremely rude, trying to make me feel guilty. Then when my dad brought her to the shelter she had the audacity to tell him, "Tell your daughter not to ever adopt from Peewees again." I called to complain, seeing as how I let it slide the first time I was not going to do the same again. She then proceeded to tell me how she was only telling the truth. And when she 'apologized' she did it in an insincere and rude manner! Also, she continuously cut me off during our conversation, put me on hold to talk to her friends about it (while I was still on the phone!), then proceeded to try and justify her words and actions. She then, at the 'end' of the conversation, said "I have to go." At this point I was fed up with her bad attitude, hanging up the phone in disbelief. Our entire conversation was nothing but her cutting me off and being rude to me. I don't know what kind of people care more about animals than other people, but something is seriously wrong with people like that. And if they cared so much for these animals, why did my dog have a disease when I adopted her? To make matters worse, it was a disease people could catch. My vet said a lot of pets from Peewees went in with that exact same disease. They are filthy, and shouldn't remain open at all. The Gulf Coast Humane Society is the way to go. Unbelievable!

Business Response:

We apologize for negative experience with us, but everything the Shelter Director said was true. Depending on what you adopted, it becomes very difficult to find another home for the dog since it is now older (if it was a puppy that is now grown, its pretty much impossible). When a person adopts an animal, you are adopting a furry four legged son or daughter for life. Because of this incident and others like it, we started questioning people what they planned to do with the adopted dog if they have a baby or move to an apartment. There are hundreds of thousands of people across the United States who had babies and moved into apartments, and made all the necessary arrangements to keep their pets. We have the pets best interest in mind at all times, and we don't want them to have to spend the rest of their lives here. We do apologize if you felt the conversation was rude, but we want people to know that they may have ruined this pet's life by their actions. As to the place being filthy....it is a ranch setting and we have just a few people caring for hundreds of animals that were left running the streets of Corpus by irresponsible pet owners. We do what we can with the little money we have. Yes, pets get sick every once in awhile. It happens. We adopt out almost twice as many animals per year than the Gulf Coast Humane Society, all while being twice as strict on applications, operating on a quarter of the donations compared to what they receive, and with a quarter of the amount of staff on hand.

So far a very difficult experience. We wanted to adopt a pet. We do live in an apartment and there is already a pet deposit on file, and they called and it was confirmed but that wasn't enough. They want to speak with the main manager of the apartment complex. I pay 1300 dollars and pay pet rent already because my former roommate had a dog and he moved out with his dog. So the deposit is still there and the monthly payment is still made but no dog. The lady on the phone would not listen to reason

Business Response:

We have to go by the book when it comes to pet deposits. Too many people were not paying their pet deposits and then got caught, and then would bring the not-so-cute-anymore animal back, and we would be stuck with it forever. We are just covering our behinds. We apologize for the misunderstanding, but we are looking out for the well-being of the animal.

We at Peewee's do care about finding animals GOOD FOREVER homes. We apologize that you did not see your application all the way through. All we had to do was call your vet on Monday to verify that you were a good home. We apologize for the delay, but we have the pet's best interest in mind.

We found a sweet dog on the side of the road and took him in but couldn't keep him and decided we'd give Pee Wee's a shot. We got there and she was full, and you could obviously tell she was. The lady running this play is very rude and not inviting at all. The dogs there are just thrown in a yard with no shade and look unhealthy. I realize that this is non-profit and I believe this is a great idea in the fact that they help pets but being rude gets you know where with a business.

Pros: They accept all pets.

Cons: Dirty, rude staff, sad shelter.

We got our wonderful dog ladybird (they called her Velvet) at Pee Wee's more than 2 years ago. We didn't have any problems adopting her. They didn't charge us anything because she is an older dog. Yes, they do ask a lot of questions. Most of the animals there were not taken care of properly in the first place. I think they do a very good job of taking care of the animals. The have shelter, food, medical care and room to run around. They are treated kindly. They operate on donations and volunteers alone.
Why not help out instead of complaining. The Humane Society has Denny Bales' support. Why not help Pee Wee's out?
