We were very excited about one of the rental properties Mr. Owens was managing. Mr. Owens seemed nice enough and assured us that he managed hundreds of properties all over the city and that he had been in the business for 30 years.

We were actually sitting in his office, our deposit in hand, reading over the lease and ready to sign it when we began to feel uneasy. The lease had numerous tenant responsibilities that we had not seen on any of our previous leases. For example, the tenant was solely responsible for paying to fix the pipes in the event of their breaking in a freeze. And the tenant was required to pay $60 out of every repair, regardless of whether or not the damage had been the tenant's fault. And the pet deposit was twice what it had been in our other leases. And so on.

When we asked Mr. Owens about the tenant responsibilities for pipes and repairs, he told us that this was standard for his company and that we could take it or leave it.

(Thoughts: I bet that he manages enough properties that losing one pair of renters won't set him back too much. But I doubt that the actual property owners who are paying him to find them renters would have been quite so dismissive of our concerns and of our steady rent check.)
After our conversation with him, we saw enough red flags that we decided not to sign the lease at that moment.

When I went home to do some research, I found lots of mixed reviews about Mr. Owens. When I looked in the "not recommended" reviews on Yelp (hidden in a link at the bottom), that's where I found the stuff that truly alarmed me. Though the property was awesome, I believe we dodged a bullet by not signing that lease.

This company is by far the WORST I have ever dealt with. I hate the fact that I have to give them a star at all. They are very rude, unprofessional and condescending. James uses the fact that he is an attorney to screw you out of money and violate your privacy and terms of your lease. The woman, Helen, who works in his office is extremely inefficient and graceless. Gerald is also a HUGE RUDE JERK. They should not be allowed to work around people, because they are not able to communicate effectively with ANYONE. I am currently being charged with a problem that was not only CREATED by one of the maintenance workers they used to fix another issue (also being stuck with a $300.00 bill for the work that was half asses done) which in turn created a utility bill that exceeded $400.00 that they REFUSED to pay. James Owens also took it upon himself to enter my residence without an appointment, my knowledge, or my permission. He is a sneaky son of a b*tch and I can only tell you all, DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS A HOLE. It's not worth the headache!

Mr. Owens is extremely rude! He called me while I was at work and when I answered the phone he didn't greet me at all, instead he yelled at me because he assumed that I did not follow through with a part of my lease agreement. When I replied to him telling him that I did fulfill the agreement and that I was at work and I would call him back, he didn't hear me because he was still barking at me over the phone so I decided to hang up.

He then called me 5 times back to back like a stalker! He was so unprofessional and rude. I cannot wait for my lease to expire so that I don't have to communicate with him again. I was considering buying the property I am currently leasing from him but I would rather not have to deal with him again so I am looking for another place to buy.

I chose JD Owens after having considerable problems getitng my house leased with another agency. Owens communications are prompt, reports are prompt, fees are reasonable. Most importantly he finds good tenants and does so quickly. I found him through the recommendation of a friend who had similar problems and was similarly pleased to find an honest, reliable agent.

There were miscommunications and bungled encounters from the get go. I found the property for rent, submitted an application and was approved. Even before I saw the lease I was told to send deposit and first month's rent. I wrote a check and mailed it (I had not moved to TX). I was then called and told that this funds had to be provided by a money order, and asap, a detail not mentioned earlier. I spent a lot of extra time and effort to get this and was forced to send it next day air at a pretty penny because now time was crucial according to them. I kept asking for a lease, not wanting to send even more mulah with nothing in writing. They eventually admitted to losing my application and I had to submit another. I signed a lease to rent a house with several conditions that were supposed to met by the landlord before I moved in. These conditions were not met, the house was a disaster, and Mr. Owens was extremely rude and nasty over the phone. I ended up leaving and will NEVER do business with these people again.

Never gave notice when showing the house, sent rude emails about rent that hadn't been paid when we had already made payments. They are also verbally rude via phone calls or face to face. If he is your landlord you will be nothing more than a street number and check to him. I am glad I moved!

If you are the type of person that finds the good in all people, you will soon be disappointed if you choose to work with this company. There are trustworthy real estate agency out there, and this is NOT one of them.
