As a physician, it is always difficult to respond to very strong accusations as we are bound by laws and HIPAA. But I would like to educate potential breast augmentation patients about the procedure and natural post operative course. At the initial consultation, I explain that this surgery will likely lead to future surgery. The simplest reasons are the implant will eventually fail or the tissues either loosen or tighten. These implanted devices are not meant to be life long and will need replacement. The companies that provide the implants do give a guarantee that if the implant fails they will give a replacement implant for the one that fails. The two primary companies have changed their policies over the years and some have covered the cost of both implants, even the un-ruptured one, and have a plan to reimburse patients up to $1200 for the anesthesia and operating room costs for either 5 or 10 years depending on that company??s policy. These policies are from the date of your original surgery. That is why it is important to keep your records on the implants which are provided for you by the companies and physician at the time of surgery. One can obtain a copy from their physician or surgery center if you do not have these records; at least write the name down of your physician and facility in which the surgery was performed. If you cannot remember then it will be assumed to be greater than ten years since the original surgery, but the warranties are still only covered when the original operative note or documentation is available. The physician and office staff usually give a quote for the cost of the replacement surgery on your initial consultation based on the information you have provided. If you tell a new physician a wrong date and this is reported to the company then miscommunication may occur. This may lead to economic miscommunication and a different economic outcome or outlay than expected. This may alter your relationship with your physician.
The second reason for future surgery is the tissue around the implant loosens or tightens (capsule contracture). As we get older our soft tissues and skin do stretch and become looser with natural tissue breakdown and gravity. Since all implants, saline or silicone, ripple, it is understandable that as the soft tissues and skin loosen and thin, then the implant and its inherent rippling can become more palpable or even visible. This is much more apparent on thinner patients. Tightening of the soft tissue capsule around the implant can also occur. This can become painful or hard and may require surgery.
When an implant deflates, one recommends either replacement or removal. Most patients choose to replace rather than remove. Since the implant companies usually will provide two implants, depending on their policies at the time of the original surgery, at no charge, again, most patients would choose and sign a consent form to replace both at the same time. The exchange of the old implants for new ones in the same pocket is simpler and less painful than the original procedure. However, it does have the same risks as the initial augmentation.
As described above, a soft tissue layer called a capsule forms around the implant. During an exchange of a non-ruptured implant, a small incision is made in the skin, subcutaneous tissue and capsule. The old implant is removed and the new one placed. After closing the incisions, the capsule repairs itself and the new implant and breast follow the natural course of what the original implant would do with time.
With a deflated implant exchange, the capsule and skin may shrink depending on the length of time between the deflation and exchange surgery. The physician may have to partially release the capsule, with cuts in it that look like the longitude and latitude lines on a globe of the world. At this point, the soft tissue surrounding the capsule will usually be in a similar position as it was prior to the deflation. This may be a little sorer, but may be necessary to create visually symmetry at the time of surgery with the opposite breast. Usually the deflated side once exchanged will look a little higher until the skin stretches out again. The capsule will reform to hold the implant in place, and will take at least six weeks of light activity so as to not rupture more soft tissue or capsule. The new capsule still may stretch out or tighten in the future. Most physicians for a new patient will charge the same as an initial breast augmentation, but if you return to your original surgeon, there may be some discount.
I hope this is helpful and informative. Augmentation patients continue to be very satisfied patients. Many do wonder why they waited so long. RSH

I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Haupt. He answered all of my questions honestly and made me feel comfortable about MY choice. He was always available throughout the whole process. I can't imagine going anywhere else for my surgical needs.

Dr. Haupt is the most kind professional doctor I've ever met! He made me feel at ease with my choice about breast augmentation. I am thirlled with my results and have recommended many of my friends to him. The staff was so friendly and quick to answer all my questions. I thought this whole process might be a bit awkward but everyone there made me so comfortable. I highly recomend Dr. Haupt to anyone considering surgery!

Dr, Haupt is the most knowledgeable; qualified and caring Dr. I have ever met. I would never have recommend not only my sisters for plastic surgery but my mom was 75 years old when he did her tummy tuck. I don??t know another doctor that keeps in contact with all of his patients. I some times think Patients want perfection and not improvement. NO ONE IS PERFECT!!!

Dr Haupt was to replace 1 ruptured implant, instead he replaced both and charged me for both at $600 each. The implant in my left breast sags to the left and the seams can be felt quite easily. Both breasts sag outward and one is a bit higher than the other. I did take Dr.Haupt to small claims and the judge dismissed w/o prejudice stating it was "malpractice" I would like to find any other patients dr haupt has disfigured and lied to and file a class action lawsuit, I will sue him in district court in salt lake, however, If there are others out there who would like to have what Dr Haupt did corrected, Please contact me. My implants look horrible, after the surgery I was left with sagging breasts too, because of how and where he placed the implants. dr haupt wrote me a letter claiming he was sure once the judge saw I had lied and misrepresented things he would rule in Dr.Haupts favor. I have all my records showing other wise. Haupt is horrible plastic surgeon, if anyone could see what a horrible a job he did, only one implant needed to be replaced and he did both and the both look terrible.
