In my quest to try things new, I ate a delicious, vegetarian meal at Zen Palate, located near Union Square. While I plan on going back to try some more dishes than the one on my first visit (a dish I can't remember the name, but I loved the noodles and mushrooms), I might go back alone as the idiot I was with wanted a hamburger!

The first Indian restaurant I went to when I moved to New York City. The food is great, atmosphere plush and in a great location. A lot of friends go there and all say the food is authentic. Be prepared to spend those Manhattan prices!

My friend and I visited this restaurant the other night. This is a great place to sit outside in the summer months and to eat something exotic while not feeling overwhelmed by the heat. I love their yam fries and although I am not a vegetarian, I found myself very full with the Mushroom entre. I think the emphasis on the sauces and uses of color are a great draw. In addition the affordable price and loungie ambiance of this location makes it someplace that everyone can enjoy for lunch or dinner.

PROS: Good location, a variety of choices from the menu
CONS: Tight sitting and can be a bit crowded but worth it

There are plenty vegetarian restaurants in the city where you can find food that will fill you up and make you feel good about yourself. Unfortunately, Zen Palate is not one of them. It seems that the chefs at Zen Palate are much more worried about the weirdness and presentation of their food than about its taste or calories.

Dishes here are overpriced and offer little satisfaction for the price. If you are dining in, the food is definitely pretty - it's arranged artistically on the plate and dazzles the eye with texture and inventiveness. If only it dazzled the mouth half as much.

If you are ordering out, you will get your food in a sectioned box, which probably adds about 30% to the price of already expensive food. Half the stuff you get in your box is garnish that ends up in the garbage. So much for artistic presentation.

The one notable exception is cauliflower and almond soup. Unfortunately, the restaurant rotates about half a dozen soups, so chances are you won't be able to order the one good thing on the menu.

PROS: Cauliflower soup is great.
CONS: Overpriced; food lacks substance.

We have been to 3 of the Zen Palate locations, and I definitely think it matters which one you visit. The union square location doesn't really seem worth visiting, but the one on the upper west side on broadway is awesome. The food is consistently good, and I have tried something new every time we have gone. I have been to the one on 46th only once, but that also was great. Each one has a slightly different menu. Try the sweet & sour sensation or the Tapestry embrace!

My boyfriend and I make it a point to stop by and eat here each time we visit or drive through the city. Great food and inexpensive prices even on the dinner menu make this place a clear winner in addition to being a great place for star-spottings.

zen palate's only selling point is its convenient and trendy location on union square. my boyfriend and i could not find any connection between the descriptions of the items we ordered and what arrived at our table, let alone how these mystery dishes were supposed to be 'good'. if i want greasy food, i'll go to one of the millions of chinese places in the city whose grease actually makes it taste good.

Pros: location, chi-chi-ness

Cons: gross food, horrible service, obnoxious patrons
