More about Kalamazoo Orthodontics Dr. S. Jay Bowman
Dr. Bowman is a licensed Orthodontic Specialist who has been in practice in the Kalamazoo area since 1985. He has 3 convenient office locations in Portage, Kalamazoo, and Paw Paw.
Dr. Jay Bowman has been specifically interested in mechanisms to improve the effectiveness
and efficiency of quality orthodontics for the benefit of both patient and practitioner. In 1993, he
developed Class II Combination Therapy, combining molar distalization with fixed functionals to
reduce reliance upon compliance for predictable case completion. In 1996, Dr. Bowman was the
first in the U.S. to incorporate the Distal Jet in practice and has been instrumental in continuing
research (assisting with 9 Master's Thesis at 4 universities); leading to the development of new
appliances: the patented Bowman Modification and Horseshoe Jet (using mini-screw anchors).
Dr. Bowman was also asked to develop his own signature, pre-adjusted orthodontic bracket,
the Butterfly System: a low-profile esthetic appliance featuring a vertical slot (using several
auxiliaries he also created). In addition, he invented the Quick Fix for Class IIIâ??s, Monkey Hook
and Kilroy Spring auxiliaries for impacted teeth, Aligner Chewies and Retainer Retrievers for
Invisalign, the Bowman Consolidator, as well as many other innovations for clinical practice. Jay
has also developed a number of auxiliaries and treatment mechanisms for mini-screws (TADs)
and is the co-author of the book, Mini-Implants in Orthodontics: Innovative Anchorage Concepts.
Jay is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, a member of the Edward H. Angle Society
of Orthodontists, a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and Pierre Fauchard Academy honorary
organizations. He developed the Straightwire course at The University of Michigan, is an Adjunct Associate
Professor at Saint Louis University and on-staff at Case Western Reserve. He has lectured in 27 countries,
had over 80 book chapters and articles published, and has maintained a successful orthodontic practice
for over 25 years.
