Not a place to go for a man to have his hair cut. Though they're regular stylists, I didn't feel very comfortable having just my hair cut. It didn't seem like I belonged there, mainly because everyone else was having an eyebrow wax or some other frightfully painful treatment.
Ladies, it's worth a look. Gentlemen, save your cash for your old barber.
PROS: Clean, home-feeling establishment
CONS: Better to go for salon-type stuff instead of haircuts
I don't know anything about plumbing, and I don't mess with my pipes or pretend that I do know anything about plumbing.
We had these guys over to help us ascertain the source of our basement flooding. While they were prompt and courteous, they had a tendency to talk around the problem, leading me to wonder whether they knew what was up or if they were being vague just to pad their prices later.
Their estimates were in the same neighborhood as the others I had contacted, but they gave me a number with no description.
PROS: They come over and check out your problem ASAP
CONS: You'll be completely in the dark, giving them the potential to swindle
Smells like...corporate gyms who allowed too much slack in their hygiene and cleanliness.
Most Gold's locations are pristine and offer various equipment for cardiovascular and muscular development. This Gold's, however, reminds me of old socks and high school gym lockers. I walked in, had a look and a smell around, and promptly left. You would do well to follow suit!
PROS: Good location, friendly staff
CONS: A smell not even a mother could love
I tried out the behemoth LA Fitness on Roswell Rd.
Located where Harris Teeter used to be, LA Fitness is a cavernous athletics-monster that has every machine and freeweight known to man. How fitting that the place where I used to buy pizza and beer is the same place I try to work off the result!
For any matter, it's as high tech and as clean as you would expect from a modern gym. I prefer it to Gold's, but what I don't like is the huge lines and the crowds of people you see. Sometimes when you sweat, you don't want the hot girl from high school to see you grunting. Everyone and their mother comes to this gym, which is both a testament to LA Fitness' popularity and a warning to those who prefer to workout alone.
PROS: Treadmills and weights galore
CONS: Everyone will be able to see that you can't bench more than 150 lbs.
I took my clothes to Old Salem for years before the dry cleaning gods gave us fire and Dryel. I always got my clothes back the day they told me to pick them up, and I've never had a problem with them, ever!
The only complaint I have is that the prices are a little more for services you can get about anywhere else for 25% less.
But the trade-off is that you'll get a no-surprise service.
The ultimate question here is whether you value money or peace of mind.
PROS: Tried and true consistency
CONS: More expensive than competitors
I bought a pair of slacks from Banana Republic for $70. Altering them at the BR would have set me back another $20, and they wouldn't be able to get me the slacks back for FIVE DAYS.
I couldn't wait that long, so I took it to Kim's Expert Alterations. I was very happy to see that not only did it take them a day, but they charged me half of what BR would have. The place was clean, and unlike other alterations and drycleaning places, my clothes didn't have a funky smell when I picked them up. Very good stuff.
I'm a pretty big guy, and I'm not exactly flexible. A first-timer to yoga, I was nervous about going. Luckily, the Bikram Hot Yoga studio on Peachtree was there to the rescue.
With instructors that pointed out what I did wrong and also showed me how to fix what I was doing, I felt very at home. The people in the session were also more than friendly; I didn't feel like a complete outsider at all.
Users beware, though--Bikram Hot Yoga isn't just a clever name. The room where you practice yoga is about 105 degrees, so you'll get a sweat going. But it's very much worth it! You'll feel completely energized after you're done.
PROS: Even the most incompetent can practice yoga here
CONS: Though they're accomodating, there aren't very many levels for beginners
I was very worried about having my wisdom teeth taken out. I've heard horror stories of painkillers, swelling, pain, and lots of infection.
So Dr. Smouse put my mind at ease. With a nonchalant, upbeat, and charismatic persona, he makes you feel as though you're just hanging out with another buddy at the golf course. In fact, the golfer tie he was wearing made me wonder if he was headed to a driving range after the operation.
For any matter, I healed in minimal time, and only needed pain killers for the first day. The remaining checkups were smooth, timely, and effective. I've already recommended him to my other friends, and have heard similar words of praise for him. And hey, if you don't get your wisdom teeth taken out, maybe you should go out and shoot a back nine somewhere.
PROS: Charismatic, cordial, works quickly, service with a smile!
CONS: I was worried that he was thinking more about his short game than my teeth
What's there to say? From the greasy food to the stale papadum, the strange-tasting water and the non-existent service, I am sure I will never return.
You'd do well to avoid it at all costs. I felt ill for the better part of the evening; Haveli ruined my night! Not only that, but they refused to refund us for the food. I have a sneaking suspicion that the food they served us was left over from a buffet lunch earlier that day.
I still shudder after thinking about how I polluted my body with that food. Ew. But hey--at least the oranges after dinner were nice and sweet.
PROS: Good...uh...after-dinner oranges
CONS: Citrus fruits aren't worth indigestion and an empty wallet
...that is, if he isn't already the best.
